Are you talking about the Chengdu F-7, Nigeria has the latest version and they were delivered to us in 2010.

the F-7, a modern version of the J-7
The KAF operates F-5s,like your F-7s ,basically 50 year old designs, though a new flight of 15 was pimped out by the Jordanians with the latest upgrades. They're a stopgap til 35 F-15s are delivered, (the deal has already been agreed upon).
Naijja should have a flight of similar interceptors which are the same class of su-27,failing that some mirage-2000s or even Swedish jas-39. How can Africa's giant rely on outdated airframe designs and still be a continental player?

Btw,I haven't seen a thread on this,which INMHO is a crucial matter.
The Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Lamido Sanusi (above), still forecasts that Nigeria's economy will become the largest on the African continent next year, overtaking South Africa. The country's GDP is to reach an estimated $3o8bn next year, compared to South Africa's $202bn.
What this translates to in real world terms is that you must as a matter of urgency upgrade your equipment accordingly. Without the means (armour, airpower and naval capability) to protect your economic growth you risk irrelevance and worse ,losing it. Also the inability to project national force ,(a traditional African failing) makes nonsense of any regional giant pretensions.

We have absolutely no need for an aircraft carrier and cannot afford it anyways.

We need an aircraft carrier so that we may destroy the armies of ghana when the need will arise.

We do not even need aircraft to take on the Ghanian army or any army in West Africa for that matter.

Pls stop reasoning like an idiot, y do u want to attack Ghana or anybody? undecided

Can't we just send these guy to go rescue Nigerians in Tripoli.

Enough of these shakara joo
Re: Tribute To Nigerian Military In Pictures by Beaf: 1:57pm On Feb 27, 2011
We need better equipment than we have, but certainly not an aircraft carrier. Those are used to project force in distant lands.
Decent amour, fast attack boats, a couple of submarines and aircraft (in the F16 class) would suit our status as a regional power just fine.

Aircraft carriers are damn costly and are priced in region of 2 to 3 billion dollars depending upon size plus you have to pay extra 1 billion dollars for aircrafts and you need skilled manpower .
The operating cost of aircraft carrier is huge compared to other naval ship .
Plus you need destroyers, frigates and submarines to acompany the carriers otherwise they will be sitting ducks for enemy submarines.
All this cost 5 billion dollars which is waste for nigeria which donot have serious external threats
Re: Tribute To Nigerian Military In Pictures by pleep(m): 5:48pm On Feb 27, 2011
Haha I was joking About the carrier I dont want to attack Ghana or any one else. We all know that Cameroon is the real threat.

F-16 ? NOO lets get the Su-30 MK the type india uses , better than the super hornet, falcon and strike eagle
Re: Tribute To Nigerian Military In Pictures by GAR3TH(m): 11:58am On Feb 28, 2011

I dont think the airforce needs any new jets. If you ask me the army in my opinion are the ones who need aircrafts the most. Currently the army has no Aircrafts to assist their troops. the army could buy Five or Six New/Used A-10 Thunderbolt II at a cost of $8 - 13 million a piece, for the Army to conduct air to ground missions. Such missions could be sending in the A10 to destroy opposing enemy tanks and bases.

So who's up for a bit of fantasy grin
Basically we come up with a our own Nigerian navy like the ships we would want in it.

I'll bravely risk the scorn of Nigeria first wink

2 LPD- Probebly the Galicia class
2 Destroyers- Similar to British Daring class
5 Frigates- Meko A200SAN (Valour Class)
8 Missile boats- Stick with the Combattante III
4 Hunter-Killer subs- Diesel Type 214
2x Fleet AOR- Fort-class replacements
2x Fleet tanker- Leaf class
1x Forward repair- Based along the lines of future Diligence class
2x Ice breakers- For research and fun wink

This list wont include OPV's and other ships not meant for war. Nigeria is the next in line for super power status in all of Africa. Europe has lost it's influence and power ( angry) and now it's Nigeria's turn to take Africa forward. I know Nigeria needs to work on poverty first but like I said, fantasy. Don't get too workerd up and have fun grin

The F-16 is superior and its also the minimum standard for modern airforces. This link has videos that might interest you: http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/the-dewline/2008/11/usaf-pilot-describes-iaf-su30m.html

I can understand if your argument is based on purchase and maintainance costs though, in which case I'd suggest the J-17, a sub-$20 million fighter produced by China and Pakistan.
A stealth version of this baby is also in the pipeline.

Actually lordangers, that kind of investment would demand an indigenous ship building capacity. GO FOR IT! Too many negroes are all talk. If we had our own ship building industry, the embarrassing story of the KNS Jasiri wouldn't have happened. Basically the gov't floated a tender to build a 300 ft long OPV,won by EUROMARINE,AN ESTABLISHED Spanish constructor at the extremely reasonable price of 4.2 bn kshs. or 60 mn $at the time. The Brits and their local henchmen, who are neither few now quiet burst into an orchestrated outrage of barking and bleating. The gov't (state house, rather)never made the final; payment and the corvette is still there 5 years later, piling on hellish demurrage fees.
What went almost unnoticed was that the BRITS in the Moi era were never subjected to tendering processes and would win supply contracts automatically WITHOUT TENDERING!! Since then we've been making do with 4 of these Brit built Vosper Thorneycraft smaller, less able 200 foot corvettes

Good analysis. Like it, but this is fantasy.
Besides Nigeria doesn't really need a ship building industry. Pretend your the president or minister of defence. Your admirals come to you with a nice long list, what would be on that list? grin

Mariory:

They take more of a beating from missiles then frigates, they can carry more heli's usually. They lay out a political message. They can carry more arnament and can perform more duties. Britain has destroyers for escort duty of the up-coming super-carriers cheesy

Fantasy-why do you say that!!? 30 years from now you're slated to be among the top 20 world economies. Can you keep that position without any meaningful indigenous warfighting equipment manufacture capacity including shipbuilding?? I think not, son.
A favourite onyibo tactic is exploiting regional rivalries into war then coming to the 'rescue' with arms embargoes when the victims have already gotten their collective sausage well and truly stepped on by aggressors armed by-guess who?
If I were the prez I'd insist the admirals start with corvette building using serving and ex-navy marine engineers. After maybe 5 or so years of experience they can then begin larger frigates,

My bad, sorry there kikuyu. Your not talking fantasies, I am talking about designing your own navie being a fantasy not your ideas. I agree with Nigeria being a clear African super power in a decade or so, it's going to need strong industries driving it, yet it also need's cooperation. A ship building enterprise can't be set up over night. But there should be a good market for it in Nigeria. If it can build a space programme, give me one reason why it can't build a ship building programme to rival the likes of Germany, that's if Nigeria's government can get it's act in gear.
