then the countless little 5 10 dollar apps you use everyday, nero, winrar etc

ahem so lets just say that this your nice laptop came priced at say 150,000 naira (sorry if dts too low, i know ur a power user 500k laptop type person) then u use close to 100k just to run it to ur needs, then anytime a small hiccup which is usual occurs, and u need specialised wares like them utilities to take care of it u regularly shell out 50-100 dollars?

really let me illustrate my gripe with an example.
i have a friend, die hard ms fan, the type that downloaded win 7 the day it was released bla bla.
just to provoke him i installed ubuntu INSIDE the windows (another first) without partitioning. he whined and complained. 5 months later i needed to do burn a new iso, so i go see him, i boot his laptop, was surprised to see it still had the ubuntu(it'l have taken all of 1 minute to uninstall it) so i boot into it. My guy has passworded the thing.

haha but u no dey use am naw, he says nothing. then when i get in , i found he has updated it so all is working, he says grudgingly " i only browse with it" well i put in the OS i wanted to copy, copied it out as an iso (not a single third party app in sight) and immediately burn the thing on a blank within 5 mins. i have a new OS cd!

to do that on windows, i would need to pay someone for the ware that would copy the iso, then anor for a ware that is good enough to burn it with no problems! and of course i must have the know how.

well simply put it was scenarios like this that made me realise that something is wrong! u pple mean that all those things u have to install in windows just to do an everyday task cannot come with the os? ok pple gat to make money shey? well im pretty sure PIRACY will be a lasting problem because i dont knw hw many pple can afford to run a legit windows system unless of course they only put it on to stare at it then shut down.

even how many companies in naija, incl all the so called medium scale, small scale, even large scale can afford to install genuine windows?


anyway so i also sleep at nite without knowing am robbing some one, i go for the OS that is free. and PLS I DONT KNOW THE LAST TIME YOU USED OPEN OFFICE BUT THAT STATEMENT QUALIFIES AS BLASPHEMY. GET THE NEW ONE, ITS FREE U KNW AND SEE. i can list 5 things it can do that MSWORD cannot and all i do is just type docs and make presentation slides!!!!!! besides, it doesnt require 1 gb of ram to run like word 2007

all these lil things that trip u pple, widgets and the likes were from opensource. and even the most pimped up win7 WILL STRUGGLE beside an ubuntu install with a compositing manager like compiz fusion. when it comes to eyecandy there are so many for linux that it makes u dizzy, beautiful ones. next time u see a ubuntu install, ask the owner if he runs compiz-fusion or even metacity. let him give you demo of the various effects. and thats even on gnome which we consider as ugly betty. a KDE install without compiz is already a candidate to floor your win 7 much less when its pimped.

I support the open source movement and all, but Linux is just a bit too geeky for me.

What I believe is that most computer users use a computer to make life easier for them, hence the computer should do more work.
When it feels like they are working as much/more than the computer, then it they might as well be without it.
I remember the first time I tried to install a software on Kubuntu, eventually, I just didnt get it, my computer literacy never reach command line et.al.

Abeg windows jor, a couple of clicks and you're through.

As per the piracy issue, I would prefer that piracy forces proprietary software to become free or at least much cheaper because open source is not all that. A new version of chrome is released every two or three days, what the heck?

installing nvidia drivers which in windows is simply double clicking required that i open a "terminal window "

installing linux was another exercise in gra gra as there must be at least 2 free active partitions

which leads me to the one major gripe i have with linux. the pioneers and really good linux users are geeks so they only write tutorials like geeks would. actually, let me inform u that the things you ACTUALLY HAVE to do in terminal are few and getting fewer by the day!!!! u see the geeks are command line savvy so they simply write cmds. and they prefer it too.

BUT if u take your time to actually look, u will find that POINT AND CLICK works on linux too e.g ubuntu, suse, fedora. when u see a cmd like cp~ /etc/modules, or mkdir , its just copying or creating a folder! u can navigate to the place, right click and ccreate new folder!!!!!!!!! those cmd have meaning!!! LEARN.

u can also install apps by downloading the deb or rpm and double clicking. the advantage of terminal or command line is if for example you want firefox and firefox need flash etc to work fully, when you use the terminal all u ask for is firefox, the terminal will get the addons automatically so actually u get lazier! in fact see a tool like synaptic. u dont even need to know what ur looking for, if u want music player, type music, it list music plyers in droves, u read the blurb make up ur mind, click 3 times and go to sleep. pronto ur done. you dont even have to go site hunting, and wat ur downloading is secure, well authenticted, no funny biz!

its an old myth that i used to have too before i used linux that it was all cmd line. and for your information were it not for the half baked computer education we get here in nigeria, the most powerful tool in windows is also the command line. the few pple who are actually learned in windows even here in nairaland talk cmd line. there is nothing you can do graphicaly in windows that u cannot do in command line. a true MS certified pro, not naija half baked will work ur pc in cmd line. its faster and easier

personally i think vista contributed to 7's success -  if ms had come out with 7 without first releasing vista, it
would have faced as much opposition i believe; i think by the time 7 came out pple were resigned to the fact
that ms was doin away with xp but the bad rep dat 7 wld hav gotten had already been piled on vista
(i have seen softare that worked on xp n vista but refused to work on 7) besides by the time 7 came out
a lot of the vista issues had already been dealt with, so these fixes were also incorporated into 7

PS CHROMIUM is some pple's idea of having fun, its actually some one some where making his own version of chrome! you can do that cos the source code is available!!! u can make ur own apps however u like, take ur mozilla and turn it into texazzpeteellia. so no alarm!!!!
