Respected educationist, Prof Pat Utomi has explained why more people die in Nigeria than any other country of the world.

The erudite educationist said the reason might not be unconnected to the fact that Nigerians like struggling over things that shouldn’t be struggled for.

Utomi who was the Guest Speaker at the 6th Pre-Convocation Lecture of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), in Abuja, disclosed this in‎ his lecture titled, “Political economy of education: “Issues and challenges of opening and distance learning in Nigeria.”

He believed that, “if we were not living in denial, one of the things we would have realised is that our country is in a rolling civil war.‎‎

“We are struggling with Boko Haram, crisis in the north Central and in the South South, we are dealing with all kinds of issues like militancy and so forth.

“More people die in Nigeria, a violent death than many of the countries in war.‎ What we have in Nigeria is an evergreen civil war.

“How are we going to make progress when there’s so much violence everywhere?

“We have a zero-sub mindset. People are struggling over things that they shouldn’t be struggling over.”

“We have a zero-sub mindset. People are struggling over things that they shouldn’t be struggling over.” e.g the death recorded in the most recent Ipob rally for uninterested President Donald Trump.

“We have a zero-sub mindset. People are struggling over things that they shouldn’t be struggling over.”

That is an apt description and definition, he just stopped short of mentioning the word or acronym.

lol, there are low intensity conflicts going on in this country at almost every moment in the year. The ones you hear and read about are the ones the Lagos press wants you to read about. Especially in the minority areas in the middle belt and the south. Brutal wars that go unnoticed but continuously consuming lives. Mainly over border issues and farmlands... Then there are the road accidents. The number of people that have died on the Lagos-Benin-Asaba road will stun you! Accidents happen on that road daily. It is by far the busiest road in the country and is now too narrow for the ballooning population.

I have also noticed that folks don't get very old as before . Just as they a hitting 70, they are dying and people are 'celebrating' the burial as that of somebody who lived long.. When i was younger, i remember i used to see old men who have bent with age and barely walk around with their walking sticks.. Not any more. Folks drop dead immediately after retirement and it is becoming the norm.. Have you also noticed the frightening increase in the number of cases of people suffering with Prostate cancer, High BP and Diabetes? Even kidney issues?? Did you notice it wasnt like this 30 years back? angry Something must have been deposited in the food chain somewhere..

What we have in Nigeria is an evergreen civil war.

Boko haram, fulani herdsmen and militancy. It is visible to the blind and audible to the deaf that we are at war.

Only a few block heads will dispute this.

Prof, Nigerians are resilient and hardy. Most of the challenges we shove aside to survive is enough to pull down the strongest men.

We are Nigerians and oftentimes when you push us to the wall, we pass through the walls.

God Bless Nigeria

The political elites, of which you belong to, do not have good plans and policies for the common Nigerian.

But, in New Nigeria Vanguard, the wrongs you all did, we are trying to rewrite.

Is President Buhari not shameless to ever and always seek medical treatments abroad?

If he runs abroad for medical check ups, what then does he expect regular citizen to do? Even more annoying is owing that the dollar is everyday getting more unaffordable to the comman man!

How does he expect the leaders of these first world countries to treat him with respect when he is indirectly telling them that there is no hospital in Nigeria?

How much will it cost him to raise a world class hospital in Aso rock, get our medical hot-heads trained and equipped, and then seek medical help there? Osibanjo is rufurbishing VP lodge with N7billion!

Is it too much for Nigeria to have one standard Federal Medical Center one in each state?

Everything is just wrong with Nigeria biko!

Prof I humbly disagree with your view because it's not actually the reason why there's a high rate of death in Nigeria. Although it can be said as one of the reasons but others reasons for high mortality rate are:

*The Lack of, coupled with improper health care facilities in the country.

*Dilapidated transportation structures which are of course "death traps".

*Poor health and safety measures. Hardly will you see a driver wearing seat belt, a construction worker with steel cap and boots or a student lab scientist with lab coat and protective goggles.

*High level of poverty of which no funds for the poor families to purchase drugs when ill.

*Over religious. The belief that an higher invisible power to cure your disease despite advance medical system implored all over the world.

*Many cultural practices in Nigeria are very unhygienic to be engaged in, resulting to the death of participants e.g. Drinking the bath water of a dead person, improper circumcise, etc

*A frequent occurrence of Food poisoning as a result of the meals being not well prepared and preparation method being very unhygienic, e.g. The Hausa "KUNU, Kilichi meat", the IBO "Abacha and Ugba" and the Yoruba "Amala" (no offense please).
