December 4th is the date to mark in every football fan’s diary, as the draw for the World Cup 2010 is made in Cape Town, South Africa.
Over the course of a ninety minute broadcast, the 32 qualified teams, whose flags have been raised above Soccer City in Johannesburg, will know their fates as the nations falls into their groups by seeding. It has taken over two years to get to this stage, as the whole qualification process was started down in the Oceania zone in August of 2007. The qualification process ended with Uruguay’s final play off success against Costa Rica, with the South American’s being the last nation to join the qualified parties for South Africa 2010.

The draw, as promised, will be a visual and audio treat of African culture, to celebrate the fact that this is the first time that the tournament will be held on the African continent, and all eyes from the footballing world will, for the first time be focused upon the Cape Town International Convention Centre. This won’t be the equivalent of the FA Cup draw with a an ex-footballer and a TV pundit running the show, this is an all out festival to celebrate the momentous occasion. There will be music from different genres to keep the party flowing, and it will be a celebration of the beautiful game as well as building the excitement ahead of the main event next year. The World Cup 2010 draw will be broadcast all around the World, and it is a chance for the organisers of South Africa 2010, to show the world what they can expect when the tournament kicks off next year.

Aptly the African continent is represented by their highest number of teams ever, with five participants, which will increase their chances of creating history by having a winner from that continent. With the likes of the Ivory Coast, Cameroon and Ghana, Africa have a better chance than ever before of having a team reach the World Cup Finals. Every team which has qualified for the 2010 World Cup has in fact, all been there before. There will be no new faces in the World Cup 2010 draw on December 4th, and all eyes will be on the announcement from FIFA about the seeding of teams for the draw. Seven teams plus hosts South Africa will be named as seeded teams, which will mean that they will be kept in separate groups.

The familiar faces of Brazil, Spain, England and Germany will be there amongst the seeded teams, but until FIFA have decided on a few points, which they will do at a extraordinary meeting on December 2nd, the full list of seeded teams will not be known. The main area of confusion is over which FIFA World Rankings to use for the 2010 World Cup draw, as the October rankings vary from the November listings. This is because some teams, like Portugal for example had to play extra games to qualify via the play-offs. Good performances will have given them extra ranking points, which could be seen as unfair and imbalanced over teams who won their groups.

But the World Cup 2010 draw is simply the prelude, the warm up act for the opening ceremony next year. Last Sunday saw the mark of the 200 day countdown until South Africa 2010 kicks off. The draw kicks off at 5pm GMT on December 4th, and it will be televised. By keeping the seeding selections under wraps until just before the draw date, there will be much speculation abound. The format of the draw will be eight groups of four, and as usual, the top two teams will go forward to the knock-out stage. There will be four Pots of teams, a seeded team pot, a pot for the rest of UEFA teams (as no more than two European teams can be together in a group), a pot for the Asian and CONCACAF zones, and a pot for Africa and South America.
