I had a hot argument with my guy today, as to which gear is best adviceable for changing the gear let's say from 2 to 3, 3 to 4.... on a manual transmission...
I voted 2000rpm, cos that's when I change...
please share yours, and if u don't mind, tell us why!

I would prefer to shift by ear rather than at a certain RPM. At least you can keep your eyes on the road

It depends on how fast u wanna go and driving conditions. When cruising on a busy road yes 2,000rpm is OK, but when u are on the highway or when u want to get an instant boost, omo 2,000rpm won't do it for u. When someone is chasing u or u are in a race against time u can even change gears close to the red zone. {Depending on the car }. Only grannies change gears at 2,000rpm when on the highway. Unless maybe u are trying to save fuel.

For me during spirited driving, the best rpm to change up is 500rpm above rated max torque rpm (anything much higher wastes fuel) while best to change down is 1000rpm below rated max (anything much lower stresses the gears).
Generally, midsize petrol engines have their rated max torque between 3000 & 3500rpm while midsize [passenger car] diesel engines have theirs between 2000 & 2500rpm.
Fuel economic driving is a whole different ball game for which google is your friend, but I would say shifting up 2500rpm for petrol & 1500rpm for diesel is ok.

For economy driving, shift between 1,500 - 2,500 rpm. For racing, shift at peak torque rpm of your vehicle. That could be 3,500, 4,000 and so on....
