The THIRD Force, a coalition of young Nigerian politicians and professionals committed to the birth of a new Nigeria, has kicked against attempts by the EiE Nigeria group to hijack and derail the planned protest by popular Nigerian artiste Tuface Idibia.

According to the group, in a statement issued on Friday in Zaria by its spokesperson Ishaq Abubakar, although the planned protest by Tuface Idibia was initially welcomed across religious, ethnic and socio-political divides as an effort to call the Muhammadu Buhari administration to accountability over the economic hardship in the country and the sufferings of millions of Nigerians, it is concerned that the initial objective is now being watered down into a vague “connect with the government” or “good governance” protest targeted at all levels of government according to recent comments by the EiE.

“The THIRD Force, just like millions of other Nigerians initially welcomed the planned protest by Tuface Idibia because the protest was meant to draw attention to the plight of Nigerians who have been impoverished by the bad government policies of the Buhari administration. But new concerns have emerged since the protest was taken over by EiE - a group of Nigerian youths whose allegiance to the Nigerian project has been called into question on many occasions.

“The EiE group was the civil society arm of StateCraft Inc – the consulting firm hired by Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to package Buhari in the run up to the 2015 presidential election. The founders of EiE – Adebola Williams and Chude Jideonwo resigned from the board of EiE shortly before they were engaged by the APC as consultants to package Buhari to Nigerian youths via StateCraft Inc. The involvement of EiE in the Tuface protest is therefore questionable and suspicious.

“We also observe the attacks by the EiE targeted at some members of the opposition who have indicated interest in joining the protest, further fuelling concerns that the main purpose of the protest by Tuface would be defeated.

“The THIRD Force is calling on Tuface Idibia and other well-meaning Nigerians who are backing the February 6th protest to stand up against any form of intimidation, antagonist exclusion and social stigmatization targeted at any Nigerian who wants to be a part of the protest irrespective of their tribe, religion, social status or political affiliation.

“We are also calling on Nigerian citizens to properly scrutinize the motives, aims and objectives of groups and individuals who are quick to jump on the bandwagon of any pro-people movement.

“The THIRD Force also vehemently rejects comments by the Nigerian Police indicating that the planned protest by Tuface Idibia will not be allowed to hold. It is not only anti-democratic but violates the rights of Nigerian citizens to protest and make their voices heard.

“Without mincing words, it is a slap on the face of our democracy that a pro-people protest is being proscribed by the Nigerian Police under a government that rode to power on the wings of public dissent and protest. Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the acting President of Nigeria who happens to be a pastor, lawyer and senior advocate of Nigeria should take note. History is taking account”, the group said.
