Deji Of Akure Vs Eze Ndigbo Crisis Deepens by alade112(m): 8:25am On Feb 06, 2017
Akure—THE crisis over the Eze Ndigbo leadership in Ondo State deepened weekend as the Deji of Akureland, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi issued a month notice to the erstwhile bearer of the title, Gregory Ilohehika to consider accepting the title of “Igbo Leader” (Onyendu Ndigbo) in place of the proscribed Eze Ndigbo title.
A letter to the effect has been forwarded to Ilohehika from the monarch.
Onyendu Ndigbo is the new approved traditional title for any Igbo leader in Akure and its environ.
The Chief Press Secretary to the traditional ruler, Micheal Adeyeye, said yesterday that; “A month notice has been communicated to Mr. Gregory Ilohehika to accept this in good fate taking effect from February 1, 2016.
“Based on the amendment, Mr. Gregory has been advised to apply in writing for this new title if he is still interested.
‘’Failure to comply with this directive shall amount to rejection of the new title.
“In view of the possible rejection of the new title, the Igbo community shall produce another leader at the expiration of the ultimatum.
“His Majesty remains committed to ensuring peaceful and harmonious relationship with the Igbo community and all other non-indigenes in Akure Kingdom.’’
But, the Igbos in their reaction said; “We have considered the title of Eze Ndigbo as adopted by the Igbos outside Igbo land as sacrosanct and non-negotiable and that the title is widely recognized and used both within and outside Nigeria as approved by the association of Ndieze Ndigbo N’uzo Ije and Onaneze Ndigbo worldwide which are the parent bodies.”
The Igbo Community spoke through the President and the state Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chiefs Okechukwu Okorie and Alloy I.K Anoliefo in Akure.
“It was unanimously agreed that the Igbos in Ondo State as a body is standing by the position of the parent bodies on the use of the title as adopted by the Igbos in diasporas, and that Sir Gregory Iloehika having been installed remain the only recognized Eze Ndigbo,” the statement said.
They said the leadership of Iloehika as the Eze is not limited to Akure, the state capital but to all the 18 Local Government areas of the state as he was duly elected in keenly contested election by the entire Igbo in the state.
They warned the Igbos wherever they may be living to respect their host communities and not engage in any act that can bring the Ohaneze Ndigbos name into disrepute.

What point is the Deji trying to prove? How is the title of Eze Ndigbo affecting his reign over his subjects? Did they say it is Eze na Deji Ndigbo na Akure? Why do people like to create problems where there is none? Did the Eze ask him to provide a kingdom and throne or to step down from his own? Has any Igbo person disrespected the Deji or yoruba tradition? Is there no Eze Ndigbo in Ibadan? Oba don stop to be Oba for dia? Yet they will say they are looking for peaceful cohabitation.

That was still part of the inexplicable pain of ur Deji. That the Eze had his cap and traditional regalia on in his presence that is why he ordered spineless dogs to attack him. A person that represents his people ought to appear and look the part in what identifies him with his people. Deji needs some courses on self confidence and respect for others clearly. And that is the difference between you and the northerner... While the northerner irritates with his unbridled violence, you hardly hear of "i am the host" and "you must respect your host" up north. Yet it is the same igbo with that "his attitude" that you find in Akure that also resides in the north! The dramatisation of this confrontation is uncalled for.. That is absolutely unnecessary because nobody is really dragging anybody's land with the other. The crises is your own making.. It is all in your head. If you don't sell your land, he will never buy. He has never risen to kill you in the night over land/farm/houses. The northerner understands that and doesn't feel threatened by a man who traveled from his far-away homeland to come earn a living in his land. Most riots/killings in the north are either a product of religious differences or political differences stimulated in the main by religious tensions... You have to get this;Citizenship in this country is earned based on the spirits of the constitution and not based on fables told by some prehistoric monarchies. Deji will be sued if he trespasses again and the law will put the illiterate firmly in his place..

Exactly. Why does the title, 'eze Ndigbo' scare him this much? I wonder.

Lawfully, he has no legal rights to tell Eze Ndigbo what title to bear when Eze Ndigbo's jurisdiction covers the affairs of all Igbos in the state, and thus the title is befitting.

Nobody is angry, infact Iloehika is brave and courageous to stand his ground. Instead we see the Deji here himself getting unnecessarily angry over an 'Eze Ndigbo' title.

Does Eze not mean King?
Eze Ndigbo would then invariably mean "King of Igbos".

Should Igbos resident in an erstwhile evidently Yoruba territory like Akure be having a King, when there is another king? All people in Akure are in his traditional domain.
Why can't the so called Eze accept the "Onye Ndu" title?
An "Eze" connotes a traditional stool, imo.

And why is the Deji worked up over Eze Ndigbo, when there is a Sarkin (King) of the Hausa community? undecided

What happened to the Democracy we are practicing in Nigeria? Or our democracy is only on paper or what? undecided

This is just me saying. The Deji's actions are not necessary. I would say the same too if happens to be a Sarkin of the Hausa community or the leader of any immigrant community in Akure.

This Eze nonsense is still ongoing? Well, good luck to the Igbo in Yorubaland, being unnecessarily thick-headed on the subject matter.

That said though, it's unlikely that this will degenerate into any sort of true or long-lasting physical conflict. Yoruba and Igbo like to talk a big game, but I don't ever see them coming to anything more than words on this.

As if ChinenyeN is not being ChinenyeN. How are the Igbo in Yorubaland being 'thick-headed' on the subject matter simply because they choose to have an elected leader of their own rule over them?

This is just me saying, you might just need to learn the boundaries between not being Igbotic and being reasonable.

Stop being dense, bigfrancis21. No matter how anyone tries to spin it, everyone knows what the term "eze" has come to mean. Do you honestly believe that an indigenous population would quietly sit back and let you, a stranger, act as if you have a domain in their ethnic territory? Abeg. Don't be dumb.

If truly the issue was about just having an elected leader, then the Igbo community there should have simply settled for "Onye Ndu". Incidentally, that is not the case.

But the Igbo aren't the only ones making an issue out of something that could have easily been resolved. The Yoruba and this Deji are behaving as if they are new to Nigeria. It is well known that the "Eze" title, in this our modern era, is frivolous child's play and comes with no real authority. Knowing this, the Yoruba and this Deji could have simply laughed it off and continued about their business.

But nationalistic ethnic agendas won't let either side think straight. Unnecessary concern on the part of the Yoruba and the Deji, and unnecessary thick-headedness on the part of the local, non-indigenous Igbo community.

It is as the proverb goes...

Let the visitor not overstay their welcome, and when it is time for them to go, let not the host allow them to leave with a hunchback.

The host part is my own addition.. for emphasis.

In this respect, both Igbo and Yoruba have failed.

In this respect, both Igbo and Yoruba have failed.

Your response shows you lack real understanding of the issue at hand and your knowledge of the matter is superficial.

First of all, you claim to be Igbo, render the interpretation of Eze Ndigbo for everyone here reading to see? King or leader of the Igbos isn't it? Mr. Iloehika was elected by the Igbo community in Akure as their leader/king/spokesperson looking out for them. Why should this be a problem for the Deji? How does this usurp his own throne in the area? It is further laughable as he attempted to impose on a non-Yoruba speaking community a Yoruba-named title for their leader. This is the height of ethnic insensitivity. Second, there are many Eze Ndigbo in not only most states of SW but throughout Nigeria living peacefully with the natives of the town and are duly recognized as Eze Ndigbo, why then is the Deji of Akure having issues with the Eze Ndigbo of Akure? Does an Eze Ndigbo of Akure stop the Yoruba natives from paying natives to the Deji? What about the constitution of Nigeria which empowers everyone as a citizen of Nigeria with the right to migrate and live freely in any part of the country? Third, migrant Yoruba communities outside the SW have Obas as their leaders guiding over them. The same applies to migrant Hausa communities also.

The Deji's unnecessary faction with the Eze Ndigbo is needless. Culturally speaking, the Deji of Akure is the spiritual leader of the Yorubas, and the Eze Ndigbo the spiritual leader of the Igbos. However, this does not stop the Eze Ndigbo from recognizing the paramount authority of the Deji in that domain. It is as simple as that.

The Igbo in the past were republican and may not have had their own kings however this does not mean things do not change. Things have changed and many Igbo communities now have their own kingship system in place duly recognized by the people.

Do you honestly believe that an indigenous population would quietly sit back and let you, a stranger, act as if you have a domain in their ethnic territory? Abeg. Don't be dumb

Finally, explain to everyone reading this thread how a leader of an immigrant community is 'acting like they have a domain in another man's territory'. Did the Igbos in Akure break any Yoruba customs nor did they commit any abomination? If you are unable to come up with cogent reasons to support this statement of yours, then the 'dumb' joke is on you.

cc ChinenyeN: the Yoruba community in Abuja can have their own Oba but the Igbo community in Akure should not have their own Eze.

Obaship dispute rocks Yoruba community in FCT[/size]

The Obaship crisis rocking Yoruba Community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is showing no sign of abating. In fact, it got to a level that the traditional ruler of Yoruba in the territory, Oba (Dr) Olusegun Salau, warned those he accused of sowing seeds of discord among members of the community for selfish interests, to desist from such. He even threatened that henceforth, anybody caught in the act would be handed over to security agencies for appropriate sanction.

The major contention is over who the authentic Oba of Yoruba in Abuja is. Salau had insisted that he remained the only recognised Oba and advised the contenders to embrace peace in the interest of the Yoruba race.

Oba Salau recently summoned an emergency meeting with chiefs and elders of the Yoruba community at his Kado’s place in Life Camp to find solution to the crisis. He told them that the meeting was summoned to find a way of redeeming the image of the community which he noted had been badly damaged through incessant crises and indiscipline among residents.

The Oba expressed dissatisfaction that the main reasons for the formation of the community were yet to be fully realised many years after the community was formed. ”During this period, it has been one form of crisis, mistrust, bickering, blackmail and all these have largely affected our progress and image as a community in FCT,” he told them.

According to him, “going down memory lane, you will recall that the birth of Yoruba Community, FCT came into being following my installation as the Oba Yoruba of Abuja at an event which was widely publicised and which was attended by all prominent Yoruba sons and daughters residing in Abuja.”

Oba Salau, who highlighted most of the steps taken earlier to ensure peace within the community as well as in other ethnic groups within the FCT, including the emergence of Six Area Councils’ chairmen with the appointment of an Oba as the chairman to coordinate the activities of the Yorubas in each Area Council who should report back to him, said that it was unfortunate that some members went ahead and sabotaged the efforts for selfish reasons.
He told them: “It is time to put an end to all this nonsense. Our teeming brothers and sisters resident in the FCT are looking up to us for what will benefit them just as their neighbours are benefitting from their own tribal communities. In this new era of change, we cannot continue this way; it is unacceptable to me.”

Oba Salau insisted that there was no leadership problem in Yoruba community in the FCT and said: “I am the only person so chosen by the Ona of Abaji, Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa as the paramount traditional ruler and leader of Yoruba Community. I am quite aware of my enormous power
“The fact that I allowed everybody to operate freely does not mean I am weak. Henceforth, I have resolved to put an end to this disgrace and embarrassments. My actions to some extend are to bring sanity and honour to the Yoruba community, FCT where it will earn us greater peace and progress,” he stated.

Oba Salau, certainly, did not stop there as he announced the prohibition of proliferation of Obaship titles in the FCT, saying that the action was in line with the authority conferred on him by the Ona Abaji and chairman, Council of Traditional Rulers in FCT, Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa.
According to him, “Henceforth, there is only one Obaship title in the whole of FCT, which is my own: the Oba of Yoruba Abuja, while the rest will be known and addressed as Chief of Yoruba in the respective villages as my representatives in all the satellite towns and villages and they are expected to report back to me the activities of the Yorubas in the council areas

“Anybody or group of persons that move about parading themselves as leaders of Yoruba Community in Abuja, without my knowledge, for instance, the so-called Egbe Omo-Odua Yoruba in FCT, will henceforth be dealt with and treated as fraudsters.”
“Any Chief without my approval that moves around parading himself as Chief of Yoruba in any part of the FCT, for instance, those whose certificates as Yoruba leaders do not emanate from my office, will be dealt with and treated as fraudsters,” he added.

That's not how this works, bigfrancis21. Context is everything when it comes to human interaction, and human interaction is not logical. So, you can almost never apply the exact same logical constraints to two different instances of human interaction. The contexts between Akure and Abuja are not the same.

Akure. Two separate, nationalistic ethnic identities in territory belonging to only one of them.

Abuja. The same nationalistic ethnic identity, in territory that technically belongs to FG (though it is the land of another separate indigenous group).

You actually have to address both in their own context and not by the context of the other.

That notwithstanding, if I were FG, I would make the Abuja territory a no title zone, with the exception of the actual indigenous community. But, that's not my call.

This does not make sense still. FCT is owned by the Gwaris who are the natives or owners of that land despite being a federal territory.

In addition to the FCT, there are Obas of migrant Yoruba communities outside of SW in as far countries as Ghana. That's the point. You cannot have Obas spread out of your territory and not want an immigrant community to have an Eze in your own territory. That's not how it works.

Like I said before, there is a clear line between being anti-igbotic and being reasonable. No one is giving you an award on this forum for being anti-Igbotic.
