I want to travel from Lagos to Abuja for business. I'm planning on driving my car for the trip so I can use my car when I get to Abuja (will be moving around a lot ). This is my first time doing this so I wanted to know if anyone here has done this before. If yes, please do you have any tips for me? - what's the best route to take? - How much fuel do I need (I drive a Toyota corolla)? - is it worth taking my car or should I use bus and see how I can manage myself when I get to Abj. Really need advise on this so I will be grateful if anyone can help out.  |

Start your journey by 4.30am its a straight road from begger to Ibadan, with good headlights u should be halfway to Ibadan before the sun rises. |

 Leave lagos at 5am if you can trust your car. Drive slowly after 7up (80km/h) the roads there are bad once on the new tarred road speed up till you pass the benin-ore bypass cause the Ibadan road is bad and traffic diversion Ibadan to ife is straight road if you can follow a speed racer it will help you overcome bad portions of the road. The ondo lokoja route can be the issue its a maze for first timers. to accomplish this feat ask for directions from check point, fuelling stations, also watch out for luxurious bus moving in opposite direction it means you are on the right track. lokoja to Abuja is as straight as moses staff.note: remember to take your bath and brush your teeth, play nice with other road users, don't fight on the road except if other drivers force you  . goodluck.pleaSE waybill kilichi to your boy in lagos7 Likes |

Wow! Thank you very much everyone. I wasn't sure if I would get people that drive along this route. I'm grateful for the tips. Are there areas on the journey that one can stop to rest/eat? Like, Is there something similar to what you get when you stop at Ore. |

baro24: you are a first timer  , you shouldn't waste time with frivolities on the journey  . Evening and night driving on that road is a different ball game  .Your greatest challenge should be leaving ondo (owo) and lokoja (okenne) far behind before night fall, as men of the underworld plenty for that strip most prominent at night to very early in the morning. after passing through extreme bad roads and potholes stop at a fuelling station (shine your eye esp in southwest) check your fluids and general car condition rest for 20mis b4 hitting the road |

Kingreign already provided you with the best route. I doubt you will miss your way but ask questions when in doubt. The best experience for this trip happens when you drive. Your car becomes handy for you in Abuja. More so, you leave at your own time. If you have driven a long haul before, then this shouldn't be a big deal. Leave early and not that the stretch from Lagos to Ibadan is still under construction. From Iwo road junction to Akure is a very long stretch with dangerous potholes. So your speed must be within limits. Akure to Ibilo is another stretch of road with a deplorable state; laden with craters, potholes and any bad road conditions you can imagine. If you leave Lagos at 5.00am or 6.00am, you should be in Abuja by 5.00 - 6.00pm same day except there's a major delay. It is usually better to embark on this journey alone if you have no one to accompany you in the car, I usually advise against stopping to pict passengers. You don't know who you may pick. I have driven on this route alone over 12 times. You will also encounter many chech points as well as police but if you are driving alone, they mostly won't disturb you. Ensure your license and vehicle papers are intact. Feel free to ask for further clarifications. Safe trip when you leave. 1 Like |

PaperLace: I was once at owo coming back from North, a dangote trailer had done the unthinkable. Not to prolong matter the traffic was thick on both sides, this bunch of mopol and army come dey flex muscle say they won't follow area boys protocol (those guys were more like bush men) nah him the thing turn free for all fight, the army men humble themselves stand back. I just left the scene back to my sit before bullets start flying around. |

So don't leave at 4am, leave at 5am or 5.30am so that by the time you get there, there should be enough sunlight to make you see don't play with potholes, potholes and high speeds have made many a man sorry, and their pockets lighter its your first such trip, it will take you 12 hours, unless you do 160km or more when the roads are good, then you can shorten it to between 9 and 10 hours, problem is, you don't know the road! Tip: from River Niger Bridge to Abuja is almost 200 miles and the road is pretty good Ensure your custom papers are perfect - because of the kind of car, I expect them to pick an interest in you Drive defensively Keep your cool Get a good night's rest Everyone recommends this route : Lagos-> Ibadan -> Ife-> Akure-> Ibilo-> Okene-> Lokoja-> Abuja , that's what commercial drivers use but I have taken the alternate route which google map would show if you consulted it, left Abuja 8.30am and got to Lagos by 4.30pm, the key difference between both routes is long straights versus lots more twists and turns, but given how bad the Lokoja-Okene road is, am not recommending it to you! So am saying, take the recommended route! Your vehicle is fuel efficient but Nigerian highways were not built for achieving high MPGs, they are just a little better than driving in the town as far as MPG is concerned, so I second the comment to budget 20,000 for fuel if you want vetted riding companions, then sign up on the GoMyWay platform and you could get vetted passengers whose identification has been scrutinized, same way as you will be before being allowed to offer rides on their platform, that could reduce how much you end up spending on fuel! All the best - anytime I want to travel, I drive. But I always ensure the car is in top shape. And that I am very well rested so I can give it my best. I think you should take along an extra tire (apart from the official spare), cause you never know, just in case, you will save a lot of time changing a bad tire on the spot than having to go buy tires if you had issues on the road, not to talk about the outrageous costs of buying on the road Keep a decent gap between you and trailers, trucks or lorries You will meet people who have mastered the art of driving at 260km/hr, if you haven't done it before, don't try to do it on a route you are barely familiar with Distracted driving and Nigerian highways are a big no no! 2 Likes 1 Share |
