All the professionals are important.
Nice thread.

We all know they are all important.

The problem is responsibility. Who is responsible for what and when.

Just as the national assembly in Nigeria has encroached on the day to day running of government in the guise of oversight, thats the same way architects in Nigeria have gone beyond their responsibility of oversight to actual execution of site activities.

The only person professionally trained for execution of day to day building site works is the contractor aka builder.

If an architect designed a flat roof, his responsibility on site is to make sure that nothing other than a flat roof is installed. If his design gives a room size of 3mx3m, he is responsible for the builder adhering to that design.

An architect has no responsibility in the quantity or quality of structural members.

Both the architect and engr are responsible for symmetry.

I can go on and on. The problem is that each professional does not want to limit himself to his professional limits. I met an architect who is so conversant with Orion which is a structural design software. Why does he use it when it is not his discipline. It is not to gain knowledge only, it is to make money of an architect as well as a structural engineer. This guarantees that he can be a jack of all trades and master of none while making twice as much money. The problem is that he cannot sign or seal the design under his name. Who takes structural responsibility of the design?

An architect doing structural design is not just criminal, it is fraud. What i have never seen is a civil engr do is using archi cad or similar architectural responsibilities.

Needless to say, I dont blame the professionals who encroach on each other, it is the construction industry that has not spelled the boundaries and enforced it. It s currently a free for all.

A well sufficient hand on experience should be acknowledged and to lead the team as the project manager. virtually all the stakeholders in the construction industry had the background of the other profession.
I think its a thing of greed among Nigerians , when an architects designed he still wants to build, or when a structural engineers designed he still wants to build, even the cost engineer will tell you, he is to be the one to lead the team. but a team work leads to the success of the project which should be the goal of all hands to be on deck. Buildings cant collapse on paper, Let the specific bodies responsible for building management handle it
thank you

stepone:
A Professional builder is to supervise a building project. meanwhile there is deference between a builder and a professional builder which is known as a site manager, also sometimes has the title of construction manager, building manager or site agent (project/site/construction supervisor). He or she will oversee operations on a day-to-day basis, and ensure that work is done safely, on time and within budget and to the right quality standards.

An architect is the chief builder as you have said but in Nigeria, you hardly see them on site day to day.

A professional builder is a general building work contractor who can put your whole project together namely (M&E work, translating architectural drawing, and civil work and design on site). The professional builder will assume complete responsibility for the work contracted and give you a warranty once completed.

Professional builders offer:

An extensive business network of suppliers, trades, installers and experts that they draw on as required for your project.

Understanding of the technical aspects of construction in detail and knowing how houses work. They can assess your renovation and explain what is involved, as well as identify potential problems and provide solutions.

Advice on the most suitable approach if your project requires design services, and recommendations for a design professional if needed. Some builders offer both design and construction services. Alternatively, some builders are experienced in working with architects or building designers.

Extensive knowledge of and experience using the latest products and materials. They keep up-to-date and can help you make the selections that will work best for your project and budget.

Familiarity with the regulations and codes in your council area and how the system works.

Consultation with you to determine the right budget for your renovation. They know through experience the cost of materials and labour and therefore are in the best position to offer realistic cost effective construction, to achieve your renovation goals.

A written contract that clearly describes the work, materials to be used, timelines, price, responsibilities of both parties and other details as appropriate.

The ability to organise and manage a project – scheduling workers, trades and delivery of materials; keeping track of expenses; maintaining a clean and safe work site; and minimising the inconvenience to you. When necessary, they know how to deal with the unexpected and the surprises that sometimes occur in a renovation.

And lot more...
