Does First Class Really Matter? by ikspencer: 12:42am On Jan 18, 2007
I just graduated from F.U.T.O . should have graduated with a first class but like the department did not want to give it to me. They were just hoarding it.

Now, if I may ask, does first class really matter in Nigeria? Or should I just manage the 2-1 they gave me?
Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by Seun(m): 12:46am On Jan 18, 2007
Get the first class if you can. Of course, you can survive without it, but it's an enormous advantage if you get it.
Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by Nobody: 12:56am On Jan 18, 2007
it matters, it makes the difference between whether you will be considered for a job, scholarship or foreign admission or simply placed on the waiting list!
Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by ikspencer: 1:06am On Jan 18, 2007

Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by Nobody: 1:10am On Jan 18, 2007
4.48 shocked
what wicked souls those your lecturers must be. I nearly fell in your shoes too. I was on 4.49 with my final semester to go and needing a 5.00 in my last semester to go over the 4.5 mark. Thank God for his mercies, i made the 5.00, my first and only tongue

I'd rather have a 2 1 with 3.6 than with a 4.48, that's a horrible blow!
Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by Seun(m): 9:40am On Jan 18, 2007
In summary, you should make every effort to get it if you can. But you can do well without it. Good luck!
Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by rock2(m): 11:18am On Jan 18, 2007
A first class is as different from a 2-1 as much as a 2-2 is different from a 3rd class

Apart from accepting the 4.48, what other options are available to you? You do realize that the department has the right to "deny" you a particular grade if, in their estimate, you have not fulfilled the requirements for the grade in character and in learning, don't you? At least that was the excuse some of the departments in my alma mater used to deny some of such (others used some other crazy excuses such as, "we want only one first class from this department this year"wink

What is the extent of First Class without an invention. Buddy get your self an invention then you can talk about your class first or second, how you create the cash is what matters.

Most Universities now credit a first class student due to their ability to create an invention that is acceptable by others.

Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by mathways(m): 5:48pm On Jan 19, 2007
Men, try hard.A first class creates opportunities for you.You are entitled to many job opportunities and more likely to get a research fellowship for your ph.d if you are interested in latest research in your field.
All the same,I'll say do what you are suppose to do and relax.4.48 is a great GPA especially if more of the A's are in those areas you intend to specialise on( I'm assuming you are interested in cutting-edge industrial research).
Make sure you make the best use of that GPA.I'd advise you apply to US unis and get higher degrees now that you are still hot and fresh from college.
My best wishes.

It really does. getting one is like having a red carpet rolled for you. The only problem is assuming that EVERYTHING will be easy. I am currently on 4.68 in my school and I can assure you its not been easy but I can definitely see the difference between me and my mates.

A truly first class student is different not because he is better at passing exams but(for a computer scientist) he is better at applying them.

Remembering what a particular data structure looks like is useless if you can't write one.
At the end of the day, its what you do in the workplace that would determine whether your firstclass is a real or imagined headstart.
Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by Nobody: 8:37pm On Jan 19, 2007
Well it matters if youwant tofunction in the labour market but it has nothing to do with the financial mafket which is really the school of hard knocks!!

4.48 shocked

Haba, sorry about that, if something can be done about it fine, but those Lecturers are bad belles and "saddists" giving a first class is like emptying their bank accounts, only the violent take it, of course by force.

You shoulda seen it coming anyway. I gave up all hopes of a glorious first in my second year (and i'm glad I did) because no one made it in my department at the crazy end of the day, so instead i spent valuable time in software development, extreme hip hop and game testing from Unreal tourney to Age of Empires (the conquerors), Half Life, USM98, Commandos, Quake and any reasonable PC game out there. Afterall 4.49 and 3.5 mean the same!I have a 3rd class friend who's raked in #2.3m in 16 months so far, "working from home" and that's brain man!

Does 1st class really matter? Yes and No. Yes if you are lucky, can recognize/seize opportunities and have a great bargaining power. No if you don't know your worth. Don't be surprised some first classes are out there looking for a "better" job.

It's a "favour"(not labour) market though and the best ain't always the richest. Press your department for your 0.02 points (man it's a whole lotta point) and no one wants to hear the story of how you almost made it but never did. If you are in the IT field, your first class ain't bad but you need to add value to yourself, specialise in one of the various fields and start writing your professional exams. Without this, OND holders (or people with NIIT diplomas) will rule you grin

Great post from everyone.
First class is the highest academic acheivement you can make in life but I must say, It is not absolutely equivalent to success in life.
Everyone who believes  he has what it takes to make a firstclass degree, pls do go for it.
In  those days in the school, there is what I called  crying CGPA, infact 4.48, 4.49, 3.48, 3.49 head this pack.
To the author of this post, I sympathize and as well empathize with you to have graduated with such a CGPA (4.48).
Remember, making it in life is not only a function of first class. The Lord will console you the more.
5 Gbosas to you, for the great result.

4.48 men! They should just given it 2 u. First class matters only when it comes to the nigerian labour market but a 2.1 is also cool.
Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by desiree(f): 1:49pm On Jan 20, 2007
A 2:1 is just as good. What really matter is the school you graduated from and your discipline.

I can imagine anyone can get a First in Arts Management or History of Arts.
Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by babasin(m): 9:34pm On Jan 20, 2007
In Nigeria? How many First Class has become Governor, President. It is all bullshit.

It is your skill rather than some figure in your paper.

Nigeria has more uni-graduates than most western european countries yet see where we are!!
Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by Danoe(m): 8:34pm On Jan 21, 2007
Yes First Class holders are rarely leaders but are very good inventors and initiators of developmental ideas !!
Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by myluck: 11:43am On Jan 22, 2007
First class is good but 2.1 is also good.To my friend who said it depends on the school and course you read,is not true cos in our Nigerian context, those things dont count. After all, Wale Shoyinka had a third class.Your school and course does not matter here. What matters here is whom you know. This does not mean that first class is not important because on a normal ground,it gives the owner an edge over others
Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by Christino(m): 7:20pm On Jan 22, 2007

Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by myluck: 9:40am On Jan 23, 2007
The truth still remains in your personality. Here,I mean whom u are as a person makes the difference in life and not your class of degree. Remember we still have notable Nigerians who have made it like Chanchangi and a host of others. Note that am not trying to abscond from the fact that first class is very good.Infact, I have always wished I had it but finally ended in 2.1.Till date, I envy first class graduates.

I love Nigerians

Instead of trying to get the best,

they'll console themselves with any situation.

MY FRIEND THE REASON WHY FIRST CLASS IS GOOD IN NIGERIA BECAUSE NIGERIA IS A CERTIFICATE NATION SO IT MATTER ALOT. IF YOU CAN GET BY KILLING THE DEVIL STANDING BY YOUR SIDES I ENCOURAGE YOU GET.

Rogo:

MY FRIEND THE REASON WHY FIRST CLASS IS GOOD IN NIGERIA BECAUSE NIGERIA IS A CERTIFICATE NATION SO IT MATTER ALOT. IF YOU CAN GET BY KILLING THE DEVIL STANDING BY YOUR SIDES I ENCOURAGE YOU GET.

OK. Let's do it this way. From your statement, the following is understood:
1. First Class is good in Nigeria, because
2. Nigeria is a certificate nation (whatever that means)
3. Therefore, first class matters a lot in Nigeria.

The following is not stated, but implied:
1. First class is not good in all countries,
2. because not all countries are certificate nations and,
3. therefore it doesn't matter a lot in other countries.

If this is right, can you please explain what you mean by "certificate nation", and how "the devil standing by your sides" has a bearing on your statement? Thank you.
Re: Does First Class Really Matter? by DMajek(m): 9:46pm On Jan 29, 2007
yes i think a first class doesnt really matter in our dear country nigeria, because i have a cousin who had a first class and the only job he could get was the post of a lecturer in the institution he graduated from. this is the truth.but i advise everyone to go ahead and achieve the best we can achieve in our various fields.
