I stopped downloading pirated movies some time ago, but I must admit that I watch and collect them.

This list is about the latest ones that actually top the chart for being the most pirated one.

Lion

Based on the book A Long Walk Home, this film tells the story of Saroo, played by Dev Patel, an Indian boy separated from his family as a child and adopted in Australia, who as an adult is ready to find his real family—thanks to help from Google Earth. Who says technology doesn’t bring people together?

Manchester by the Sea

It takes a while to fully understand why Casey Affleck’s character in this film is so morose and angry, but when it comes, you’re going to feel all those things as well. It’s a great performance and probably going to get an Academy Award, coupled with another Oscar-nominated performance by Lucas Hedges as his nephew, a kid not exactly orphaned by pretty close. Even Michelle Williams, who’s on screen for exactly 11 minutes and 20 seconds (out of a 137-minute long flick), got nominated. Now that’s some acting.

Nocturnal Animals

Fashion designer turned film director (go see A Single Man ) Tom Ford gets back to the big screen after seven years, this time with a cast of super-stars like Amy “Lois Lane” Adams, Jake “Donnie Darko” Gyllenhaal, and Armie “Lone Ranger/Illya Kuryakin/Almost Batman” Hammer. Michael “General Zod” Shannon is also in it, and got an Oscar nom. Aaron “the lesser Quicksilver who got killed” Taylor-Johnson won a BAFTA (the British Oscar). I just like to show that everyone does superhero films now. Except for Laura Linney.

Underworld: Blood Wars

Much like Milla Jovovich returns ever few years for a Resident Evil , so to does Kate Beckinsale hear the siren call to wearing leather suits for a few months on a new Underworld . This latest, the fifth in the franchise, finds her vampire character Selene once again fighting werewolves and other vamps and the laws of physics.

La La Land

If you can get past the fact that beautiful people falling in love in Hollywood while pursuing their dreams is probably not that much of an original idea—and you’re a fan of old-school musicals—you’re going to fall in love watching Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling sing and dance their way into each other’s hearts. You’ll also need to see it to understand all the jokes at the Oscars this year.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Passengers

It should have been a total hit out of the park: put the two most bankable, attractive actors in the world together in a space-age love story with lots of action. Sadly, even the charms of Chris Pratt couldn’t make the twist of what his character pulls on Jennifer Lawrence seem anything less than creepy, at best. They sure do look attractive, though, and had a great time on their press tour.

Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange—a tale of a surgeon who can’t practice after an accident, so he sets out to heal himself but ends up learning just enough mystic arts to save the world—isn’t necessarily the most popular Marvel Cinematic Universe entry, but it’s staying power with the pirates is solid. A new DVD screener option, out to showcase the flick’s nomination for a Visual Effects Oscar, can only help. No MCU movie has won an Academy Award…yet.

Hacksaw Ridge

Mel Gibson returns to the director’s chair—it worked out pretty good for him with Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ , a lot more so than any traffic stops by the cops—to tell the story of the first American pacifist combat medic, who wouldn’t carry a weapon while serving in World War II and later won the Medal of Honor. It stars former Spider-Man Andrew Garfield.

Arrival

It’s not that often that Hollywood has a sci-fi flick that comes out not based on a previously released property (and even this flick is based on a Nebula-award-winning short story by Ted Chiang). That Arrival was not only a hit but also has a twist ending makes it all the more of a happy anomaly.
