THE Federal Government approved a new salary regime for its workers yesterday.

The consolidated salary structure endorsed by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at its sitting yesterday covers the armed forces, police and the para-military services.

Under the first category, the least paid public office holder appointed by the President but not reflected in the RAFMC salary scale will receive a total of N1.7 million yearly while the highest paid in this category - Chief of Staff to the President, CDS and service chiefs, and others - will receive a total of N4.8 million yearly.

Under the Armed Forces Salary Structure, the least paid - a private, will earn a total of N260,000 (as accommodation and furnishing will be provided by government); while the highest paid officer - Brigadier-General or their equivalents - will earn a total of N2.687 million yearly.

For the Police and the para-military services who are in one category, the least paid - a recruit - will receive a total of N63,000; a constable or their equivalent will receive a total of N293,000 while the highest paid - Assistant Inspector-General of Police or their equivalents will earn a total of N2.464 million. Their pay looks high because the bulk of officers and other ranks under this category - about 80 per cent - don't live in the barracks.

For the non-academic staff of Federal Government universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, teaching hospitals and research institutes, the least paid - Grade Level (GL) 01 one will receive a total of N152,544 yearly while the highest paid will receive a total of N2.875 million.

For their academic counterparts, the least paid GL 01 Step 01 are to earn a total of N694,000 while the highest paid - next to the Vice Chancellor in rank, will collect a total of N3.209 million.

For the personnel in the federal public service, though nobody is in level GL 01 Step 01, beneficiaries are billed to earn N133,000. The new lowest level position - GL 04 Step 01 will earn a total of N144,000 while the highest paid GL 17 Step 09 (for directors) will earn N2.271 million.

Also approved is an additional allowance of a total of N1.2 million yearly payment to personnel recruited under the Scarce Skills programme.

For the foreign missions, allowances hitherto paid in 10 categories were reduced to a single allowance and increased by 25 per cent. Nigeria has a total of 90 missions abroad.

El-Rufai noted that the allowances were not pro-rata but were determined by the location, adding that "now, our foreign service officers are comfortable."

The Council also approved a total of $3,000 for the ambassadors as clothing allowances. Their spouses will also earn clothing allowances.

For the members of the board of federal parastatals, the Council reduced their sittings to four a year. However, a chairman of the board will collect N458,000 per sitting. They hitherto earned N100,000 per sitting, approved in March 1999.

For members of the boards who earned a total of N87,000 per sitting before now, they will now earn a total of N398,000; civil servants who had attended the meetings without payments since 1999, will now earn allowances put at 298 per cent.

With this kind of money, do you think legalizing 20 20 naira collection will come up?

Interesting we are paying "The Council also approved a total of $3,000 for the ambassadors as clothing allowances. Their spouses will also earn clothing allowances."

and yet they paying a constable in police #293 / 12 = 24,000. What can you do with this peanut money a month in Nigeria? $3000 in clothing alowance is close to #400,000 so where is out priority in Nigeria?

Huummm, sensible comment, u mean the clothing allowance is more than the salary of Nigerian Police Constable? I guess if you are to address allowances, we should start from the presidency, + the rest, rest.

Hello all,

Does anyone know how much the President, VP and Governors earn?

No idea what Nigerian state governors earn in total, but their excellencies are reported to receive a flat 30 million naira monthly "security" stipend.  I can't speak for others but I would feel very secure indeed with that one million naira ( $7 grand US) PER DAY windfall, even if it were the only income I qualified for.

that's why police will always collect bribe. No 20 naira, loja me now N50. why cant FG pay ambassador instead of paying them and attaching dressing allowance. What can N133,000 do for someone in Naija. Police are supposed to paid at least N300,000 per year.

Bingo and that is why we have issues with security in Nigeria. we have competent policemens, but the government is

not taking full responsibility of housing this personels and providing lucrative salary package and pension to enable

them discharge their duties. Imagine an injured policemen only get #250,000 in insurance to help pay for his medical

expense and housing after falling prey to criminals. tell me who in their right mind will sacrifice their life for this peanut

money and we have governors rolling in styles.

Nigeria is real bad.

IF someone in this present bad stake can earn 30 Mil, then things are really going wrong oooo.

Can't the police do something? I mean something stupid like go on strike?

No strike oh, lawlessness as it is now, Imagine what Lagos and Niger Delta will be like without police.
