TEENAGERS who feel sleepy in the midst of the day are almost five times more prone to become criminals later in life.

A study found in addition they exhibit more antisocial behaviour, such as for instance lying, cheating, stealing and fighting.

Researchers say giving drowsy teens advice on the best way to sleep better – and encouraging them to get at bed earlier – may cut crime rates.

The team analysed data on 15-year-olds, like Harry Enfield's character Kevin, from three secondary schools in England.

They asked the teenagers to rate their amount of sleepiness on a seven-point scale in the beginning and end of lab sessions, which always ran from 1pm to 3pm.

The youngsters and teachers were also quizzed on the pupils'behaviour.

Finally, the researchers trawled the Central Criminal Records Office in London to establish which of the initial 101 pupils had a criminal record at age 29.

They excluded minor violations and dedicated to violent crimes and property offences which is why participants have been convicted.

They found 17 percent of participants had committed an offense – and these were more prone to have now been tired and disruptive as teenagers.

Study leader Professor Adrian Raine, from the University of Pennsylvania, said: “It's the first study to the knowledge to show that daytime sleepiness during teenage years are connected with criminal offending 14 years later

“More sleep won't solve crime, nonetheless it might make a bit of a dent.

“That can make a difference not merely for anti-social behaviour at school with these teenage kids but more to the point, with later serious criminal behaviour.”

He added: “Daytime drowsiness is connected with poor attention.

“Take poor attention as a proxy for poor brain function.

“If you've got poor brain functioning, you're more apt to be criminal.”

The researchers stress that drowsiness does not always predispose an adolescent boy to becoming anti-social.

And many children with insomnia issues do not become lawbreakers.

The study, in collaboration with the University of York, is published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry.
