Can you gain citizenship by studying abroad for a long time in the same country [For example Portugal]?
Let us assume you had your Masters and Phd in Portugal. Masters: 3 years. Phd: 4 years. which is a total of 7 years.
Within the 7 years, you've been able to communicate using the Portuguese language.
All the while you had your residence permit.

What is the experience of those abroad?
You can share your experience of how you become a citizen of the country you reside abroad.
Hints and tips.

Thanks as you comment.

Different country has different nationality law. I can tell you about the Netherlands where I stay. You can naturalize as a dutch citizen after five years of legal residence, regardless of the basis of your residence. Although during the time of application, you must have a residence permit on a continuous basis (e.g as a family member of a Dutch).

Different E.U countries have different residency procedures, I know about Belgium for example if a residential status is constantly renewed for 5 years and above, it's possible to begin legal proceedings for citizenship ... However as for Portugal, I don't know the bureaucratic processes which apply on that regard ... why don't you findout from the necessary authorities and share the info ?
However studying an advanced degree and having a grasp of Portuguese combined with English should play to your advantage
