The Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has told residents of Sapele in Delta State that their demand for 18-hour daily power supply cannot be met at the moment.

The Executive Director, Commercial, BEDC, Mr. Abu Ejoor, explained to the residents that even “the power generated to the national grid is not sufficient to service everyone in the country at the moment.”

According to a statement on Tuesday, Ejoor spoke during a meeting between the BEDC and residents of Sapele to fashion out modalities for improved power supply in the area.

“The current 3000-35000MW being generated in the country from which the BEDC’s allocation is just nine per cent is not even enough to service a state let alone four states under its control,” Ejoor said.

He, however, promised that the BEDC would restructure its network to accommodate the planned load shedding schedule, which would improve the power supply in the area to eight hours daily.

According to the statement, the meeting between the BEDC and Sapele residents, which lasted about three hours, was superintended by the Speaker of the Delta State Assembly, Monday Igbuya.

Others present at the meeting were the Chairman of the Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Power, Peter Onwusanya; the state’s Commissioner for Science and Technology, Joyce Overah; Commissioner for Energy, Newworld Safugha; and the Chairman, Sapele Local Government Area, Ejaife Odebala.

Ejoor was accompanied by the BEDC Chief Technical Officer, Ashok Acharya.

At the end of the meeting, it was resolved that the residents would pay part of their backlog of unpaid bills as well as their current monthly charges in subsequent billings.

Speaking for the protesting Sapele residents, Rev. Fr. Chris Ekabo, had listed their demands to include supply of pre-paid meters to the residents, prompt response by the BEDC officials to complaints of technical faults in electricity infrastructure in the area and appointment of two residents to watch over electrical installations.
