Why A Military Base In Southern Kaduna Is Counterproductive by Blue3k(m): 10:28am On Mar 05, 2017
A few days ago SOKAPU Youth Chapter formally requested a reversal of the approved military base in Southern Kaduna. This follows the vandalism of the foundation stone set up by Governor El-Rufai a few weeks prior.

An outsider looking in would perceive this as an affront to peace. If the people of Southern Kaduna wanted peace, they would welcome the coming of the military. The question is- what is purpose of the military? A permanent military base in Southern Kaduna means that the government expects a long drawn out problem. Rather than work to solve the innate issues, create a structure that handles cattle/farmer problems, and enforce systemic justice, the governor sends in the army. And brings them in to stay.

From the beginning the governor never showed up. His words were afar and spoken condescendingly to the people. When he came to Kafanchan, women formed a protest and approached him. He answered them with disregard, asserting some protesters were political wailers. The youth then wrongly stoned him. He responded by calling Southern Kaduna men cowards that would not stand for themselves.

Lets take a moment here – our youth were wrong to stone the governor. Also, the governor was offensive and unproductive towards the people. Both were wrong. You can disagree without turning violent. As well, you do not insult a people in their own home.

The governor may or may not be acting out of good intent for peace and stability in the region. However, he has lost all trust with the people. To better communicate it would help if he enlisted the aid of local leaders that have the ears of the people. They can bridge the gap between suspicion and truth.

On that note. To our leaders federal and local, you have to understand the difference between the voice of the people and that of your opposition. Even better, you need to listen to truth regardless of who is speaking it. Whether spoken by the people, wailers, or your opposition, truth does not change based on who is speaking it. When our leaders listen to issues we can solve them and move forward.

The introduction of the army will neither bring permanent peace or the return of investment. It will only bring a superficial calm. The underlying tensions and hatred will continue brewing until it gets the point even the army cannot contain.

So it is wise to temporarily deploy more police and soldiers. But we don’t need a permanent army base. We need a permanent solution.

This article was very balanced and had great common sense points. Sometimes people let partisanism avoid their eyes to truth. I think have more secruity on ground is ok but they do need stronger institutions to regulate these activities.

Gbam... Sensible people will see through the duplicitous words of the op. It is clear some people do not peace in Southern kaduna they prefer the killings to continue so that they can take to twitter and concoct some salacious tales around them.
