The colour, texture and shape of the nails can all signify something about your health and about the things that happen inside your body, which you should never ignore.
Some of the nail types can be a sign of chronic disease or even cancer. Nails are known to reflect the general state of our health.

Changes in the nails like discolouration or thickening can signal various health problems, including liver and kidney diseases, heart and lung conditions, anaemia and diabetes.
The growth rate of nails can also be a sign of an underlying health condition. Healthy nails are known to grow up to 3.5 millimeters every month. But certain factors like medications, trauma, nutritional status and ageing can have a huge effect on their growth.
In case you come across any changes in your nails, in terms of shape and thickness, colour or size, you'll have to consult a doctor immediately.

1. Yellow Nails:
If the nails are yellow, crumbly and thick, fungal infection is likely the cause. Sometimes, conditions like thyroid disease, diabetes, respiratory disease and psoriasis could also be the factors responsible for this.

2. Dry, Cracked Or Brittle Nails:
If you're constantly exposed to chemicals and live in an area with low humidity, then this occurs quite often. Otherwise, fungal infection, hyperthyroidism can also be the cause of cracking and splitting of the nails.

3. Clubbing:
Clubbing is the enlargement of finger nails and the nails become curved downwards. This may occur due to low oxygen in the blood. Some of the indicators might be that of a lung disease, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, kidney disease and AIDS.

4. White Spots:
These are a sign of nail trauma. Sometimes, it may also indicate a fungal infection. This is one of the nail symptoms you shouldn't ignore.

5. Horizontal Ridges:
These maybe a result of uncontrolled diabetes, zinc deficiency, circulatory disease or psoriasis.

6. Spoon Nails:
If the nails are curved upward at the edges, resembling a spoon, then you're deficient in iron or suffer from a heart disease or hyperthyroidism.

7. Vertical Ridges:
Vertical ridges are a sign of ageing and is not a cause for concern. It may be a sign of nutrient deficiency in the body, or magnesium or Vitamin B12 deficiency.

8. Pitting:
Having multiple pits in the nail is a sign of psoriasis. It may also be caused by connective tissue disorder.

9. Dark Discolourations:
This may be due to melanoma for which you 'll have to consult a doctor immediately .
