VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
ECA Fellowships for Young African Professionals I. General
information The fellowship programme targets young African
professionals who have completed their Masters Degree programmes. The
programme seeks to familiarize the young professionals with the
Commission's broad programmes and services to member States and
sub-regional bodies in addressing the macroeconomic dimension of
Africa's development challenges. It is designed to provide practical
and on-the-job experience to the young professionals as they prepare
for their doctoral studies. Finally the programme seeks to prepare
the young professionals for possible career assignments at African
development institutions, teaching and research think tanks or member
States' government institutions upon completion of their higher
degrees.
The positions are located in the United Nations Economic
Commission for Africa (ECA). ECA intensifies its effort to provide
tangible support to member States. Therefore, it is soliciting
applications for fellowships in one of its areas of focus, i.e. in
macroeconomic analysis and growth, with a special focus on
macroeconomic modelling for policy simulation.
II. Conditions The fellowship is for a period of five months. It
is open only for nationals of ECA member states.
Fellows will receive a lump-sum payment of USD 3,000 per month and
a round-trip ticket to Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia.
The fellowship is attainable for a period not to exceed five
months, without possible extension.
The fellows cannot be employed on ECA or UN regular positions
within six months of completion of a fellowship period, the
presumption being that they will proceed to further studies.
The fellows will agree to a work programme defined mutually with
the receiving department, Trade, Finance and Economic Development
Division (TFED).
The fellows will give copies or reports and any other tangible
outputs supported by the fellowship, to ECA.
III. Responsibilities
The Fellows will agree to a work programme defined mutually
with the hiring manager. Assignments within the respective area of
focus may include, but are not limited to, collect, evaluate,
interpret, analyse specified statistics and qualitative
socio-economic information obtained from a variety of sources;
maintain databases; contributing to reports, briefing notes, speeches
and other ECA documents; and assist in the organization and servicing
of expert group meetings, workshops, and seminars; and fulfil various
other administrative tasks for the final delivery of ECA's services.

The Fellows will provide copies of reports and any other
tangible outputs supported by the fellowship, to ECA.

IV. Competencies
Professionalism : Good drafting ability, good understanding of
economic theory and its applications; skill in developing sources for
data collection; ability to analyse data; ability to work with
macroeconomic models; ability to plan and organize own work and to
work in support of and in cooperation with others.

Technology awareness : Sound knowledge of the Internet and
basic software for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation
and ability to use econometrics software.

Communications : Good interpersonal and communication skills.

Teamwork : Ability to establish and maintain effective working
relations with people of different national and cultural backgrounds
and respect for diversity.

Gender Mainstreaming : Ability to identify and address relevant
gender perspectives in substantive work.

Client Orientation : Ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with other staff and outside
collaborators.

V. Qualifications Education : Advanced university degree in
economics or in a related area.
Experience : Some Experience in applying economic training is an advantage
Languages : Fluency in oral and written English and/or French with
knowledge of the other is an advantage.
Other Skills : Ability to write clearly and concisely on economic
issues is required.
