I did exactly this, they took my bad gear, starter and all and gave me everything required for the convertion, and involved a mechanic that fixed it. It set me back about 24k.

You can kill yourself, as for the gear its been perfectly converted, you can mix acid with Origin and drink so you can rest in peace.
