Just when we thought all was over with the certificate saga. Reports have it that the Examination Officers and Librarians, at Ahmadu Bello University, on Monday night, expressly debunked the claims by the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Garba, during his appearance before the Nigeria Senate Ethics Committee, that Senator Dino Melaye, graduated from the University. The Examination Officers, are still insisting that Melaye did not graduate because he could not pass Geography 307 Long Field Trip, a compulsory course required for graduation. A copy of the department’s handbook made available to Sahara Reporters showed that Geography 307, was a compulsory course that could not have been waived. Ogbonna did, was to add 2-course units to Melaye’s Total Earned Course Units, without recourse to the Teacher, Dr. A.L. Bello, who was the Supervisor of the course. SaharaReporters, further learned that after a major academic scandal broke out in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Ogbonna was quietly eased out of ABU, along with some other Professors, who had engaged in grade inflation. The University allowed Ogbonna to retire, and he found another job in Kogi State University, Melaye’s home State, before he died a few years ago, of an undisclosed illness. As soon as the VC declared that Melaye did graduate, a copy of the Joint Convocation brochure, with pages related to the Bachelors of Arts in Geography, was also sent to SaharaReporters, with the Senator’s name clearly absent. Apart from the scandal concerning whether or not he graduated from ABU, Melaye also claimed that he graduated from Harvard, and the London School of Economics, claims that have now been debunked by the two renowned institutions. 2 Likes 1 Share |

I know dino did not graduate, but used an ibo HoD to hatch his evil plan and was so desperate to get to some political height and gain popularity because it will be difficult for a.b.u to disown him publicly just to save their image. I pity that VC that came to testify. Again, the stock-in-trade in the east is HODs helping students to graduate even when they're not supposed to. All you need to do is to help the HoD you're dealing with by giving them something to support the burial of his father-inlaw(there must be an upcoming burial in their family). Who says any course can't be waived? Nigerian education system has been, was and is still flawed. Trying to make it look saintly just to hook Dino is a very foolish move. Take ABU for example; We know the quality of education that exists normally in the North yet a good number of Northerners have degrees from that University. Is that magic or what? Sahara Reporters screwed up again like they always do. All these grasping at straws is doing them no favours. They should investigate properly before rushing to the media. DesChyko:Read between the lines here. Any HOD can waive a course on behalf of a student, no one is disputing that. The question is, did he graduate despite the waiver? numericalguy: We are Nigerians and we all know that academic fraud at our universities has been going on for donkey years. Initially it was bottom power by females to gain higher pass rates, etc. Since the advent of democracy the bar has been raised I know too many former NURTW (Agberos) who have obtained degrees but can barely read and write. Our institutions have been corrupted by so many politicians using academic certification to create personal credibility. Lectures before the millennium were literally starving to death. At that stage 70k was almost a years salary and a huge amount of money. Paying that kind of money to your HOD will in most cases get your Degree. That was the environment in which Dino was in at the time. Talking about probability if Dino had any level of academic competency he would have with inducement got at least a 2:1, however he must have been so low that all he could have mustered was a third class with all his money. The evidence points to serious crime , fraud and misrepresentation. These documents didn't appear from thin air. I truly believe we have two battles here the exposure of sharp practices in ABU and the huge dent to the integrity of the institution. Finally the VC has put his name on the line, however, the diction he the VC uses is evasive and almost in anticipation of any future defence if evidence to the contrary is made public. What will happen, I suspect nothing however, if Dino takes SH to court it may bring him into a position of real contention and he could loose his seat. 3 Likes 1 Share |
