one of the most annoying things is this rubbish where 'educated' people continue to celebrate tinkerers and artisans as 'practical' work

what you are most likely to learn at the hands of your electrician is how to cut corners, provide solutions that fail after two weeks, and a rote understanding of anything.

my biggest grouse with learning from artisans is that it can fundamentally alter your approach to problem solving. our artisans here either deliberately or by otherwise, are not into root cause analysis. this is why you can find your artisan running the same repair very other month.

first off, electrical/electronics engineering is a very broad field. what are you interested in? power, telecomms , building services, control, IT?

that will determine your path.

ask your dad or relatives to connect you to friends who are engineers [esp those who have their own businesses] and offer to work with them for free. brush aside the boy boy rubbish [inevitable in nigeria] and focus on picking knowledge

You are not serious are you?

Those month re-repairs are intentional ways of making repeat money from the same customer now... They sabi wetin them dey do

It is a difficult one for engineers in this country, esp with regards to no practical knowledge.Start from somewhere as someone has said, get yourself dirty,no knowledge is waste.Ask those who are running their MSc in Power ,i can tell u authoritatively that more than half d class have the same fears u expressed here. You are lucky you are a fresher so some of these companies can readily accept you as intern, even if it is voluntary get sth doing.
Its not all about MSC,certification and experience(no matter how little) cannot be overemphasized.
I am even planning on looking for someone to take me thru some high stuffs like that,it does not depend on dy/dx .
If that MEP stuff is valid,go for it,though I doubt in this part of the world with 'beautiful' economy.
A place they will have Graduate Trainee with 5years cognate experience, and not more than 24years old.For Nigerian Federal Universities?Just take your time and envisage the plethora of opportunities that abound your way.
Wish U the best.

This our 'educated' mentality is, sadly, a stumbling block for us as a nation. Like I told the other person who quoted me, it really depends on the OP. He will pursue whatever he likes. In better countries you have inventors who learn the trade.
So love them or hate them, they do very good and useful work. You have them the world over.

Perhaps you had a bad experience and true some of them are notorious in this regard, but you brush is a bit too broad on this one. A little respect is due. I have known some of the best electricians you can find in Benin City. Sure some of them cut corners but if the OP has better vision that will only be a stepping stone for him. He doesn't have to be shackled with all the liabilities you just quoted. He has an advantage that he can see most of the things he is reading in books. Imagine an electrical engineering graduate who can't tell you if A is a resistor or transistor.

Bottom line. Make do with what you have and proceed from there.

Engineers are meant to be designing/delivering solutions to identified problems

Apart from designing and identifying problems it's advisable for him to know the basic things in his field....

Forget the courses. NEBOSH-es, AETI-s, LAGRANGE-s don't get no meaningful problems solved. Get your hands dirty.

The Engineering field is so wide you could never prepare yourself enough with certification from the outside.

Certificates matter only to he who owns them.

Talk to Baba Sikira - that generator repairman - about a six month apprenticeship with him. Under his invaluable tutelage, learn to rip open any household generator, and assemble them back. As a personal project and to validate your learnings, reverse engineer an "I pass my neighbour."

Then apply to Mikano or ABB.

Be wise. On your CV, put your apprenticeship with Baba Sikira before your BSc.

Then see how Mikano will fly your everywhere to get necessary certification. That's how you build a career from a BSc nothing

But a poster says NO to Baba Sikira. Says they are artisans and tinkerers who don't know what they are doing.

typical nigerian with poverty mentality.

rather than solve a persons problem and have him recommend you to others, you prefer to leech off him until his equipment has failed or he goes to some other technician

and people like you start to cry when foreigners arrive in this country and start taking jobs from you.

Find an electrician in your area and register as an apprentice. In two years time you will even be earning money. I swear in your final year you will do project for people and make a hell of money (I don't encourage you to do that anyway)

Start now and continue till you graduate. Don't be like me that was carried away with so many distractions. Pay the price earlier.

Dabble into video game consoles, flatscreens and computers/laptops if you can. Everything that has a panel/circuit board is in your domain. In other words, experiment with as many things as you can. There is no shortage of electrical panels for you to experiment with.

Save up money and get a laptop, then do research on electrical engineering softwares. pm if you can. I can point some out.

Go to youtube and watch videos if you have data.

Don't miss the electrician part. That is where you get the best practical knowledge.

Thank me later.

I really appreciate your comment sir and i have pm you

What are you majoring at in electrical /electronics engineering ? . I might be able to guide you .

I personally opted for electronics and telecommunication because I don't really like power though I have first hand knowledge about it.

Don't let anyone fool you about not getting your hands dirty . This is nigeria ,if you don't want to get your hands dirty as an EEE then you have to diversify in to computer . It is the truth you might not want to admit .

Who says because you have a B.sc you will be designing in nigeria ? Okay ...be the first let us see .

If you are planning traveling out of the country especially middle east . Learn HVAC .

Don't make the same mistake as me. Register with COREN . Someone recommended me but the COREN and NSE MEMBERSHIP thing dint make it go well .

It doesn't matter what he - "a poster" - said. He is just a poster. Isn't he?

Power goes out on UNILAG campus for an extended period, the school management, being wise folks, boycott Professor Amire (not real name) and his cohorts of heavily bearded colleagues at the Department of Electrical Engineering. Instead, they ask for solutions from the maintenance department headed by a City & Guild's Certificate Holder.

How wonderful.

Each member of his team is a "Baba Sikira" after official work hour. He has a small repair shop. He simply holds the UNILAG job as a sure dependable source of income.

your much vaunted baba sikira sees a burnt motor. he rewinds it, people like you cheer and hail him. the motor burns again after a week, he comes and rewinds again. wash rinse repeat. meanwhile the root probem is an overload relay or cut off switch.

unfortunately, you like teh average nigerian is wowed and overawed by 'work'

you see someone with a scattered engine and you hail him.

you need to understand something simple.
Engineering is not about repairing. it is not about patching or working it.
it is not 'getting your hands dirty' by drawing cables in a building.

too many of you celebrate mental laziness. on a project i recently completed, a junior engineer was doing the exact same things you lot love to celebrate. he was working as an electrician.

did it make him better able to understand any of the issues? no
did it make him able to simply look at a device and understand what it was ? no
did it make him behave like a technician and ignore the engineering drawings, and completely mess up m design? yes.
did it make him use off spec materials and argue that 'shebi it will work?' yes.
did he have to redo work because it was not done properly before? yes.

you learn the principle from the textbooks. the textbooks are simply presenting you condensed experience formatted into formulae, regulations, etc.

your so called experience at the hands of your baba sikira is the lesson of trial and error

your baba sikiras are just lucky that we do not have litigant culture in nigeria. thats why a lot of them can continue to do rubbish work.

anyone who works with engineering software without understanding the basic principles is just doing garbage in garbage out.

are you an engineer? are you a contractor? what yardstick are you using to measure the expertise of the 'best electricians you can find'?

do you know if they are using original or substandard materials?
do you know if they are using the right sized cable?
do you know if they are terminating your wires properly?
if you ask them the total electrical load of your building can they answer you?

you also refuse to understand - the bane of this country is short cuts and cutting corners. several of your much celebrated technicians are kings in this regard.

There's nothing to design in Nigeria, unless he goes into computers, software or networking, like someone said earlier, he's going to end up doing the job of a technician, or even something entirely out of his specialization, that's ideal Vs reality.

To overcome challenges and start collecting small small money as undergraduate & also prepare you self for life after graduation.

1. What area are you planing to specialize? & will you like to go self employ?
2. Enrol for training with a good local electric motor rewire during holidays.
3. Look for M&E (Mechanical & Electrical) design firm & do your internship after join the contractor to do the condict wiring on site.
4. if you have money go for certification on Mechtronics/Automation( PLC & co) for IIT Lagos. ( I will advice you to first learn 2&3 before going so that you won't lack money)

Lack of experience advice in our chosen field contributes to our problems.

Never mind the naysayers.

I continue to maintain that everything is up to you. If you put your head down you will not become an "electrician." What they offer in school nowadays as practical is a joke lipsrsealed. Can you imagine doing an experiment where you calculate efficiency of some electrical machine and you get 1000% as a result shocked. And believe me lots of us passed those courses with such outrageous results.

As you start out, your goal shouldn't be to become an electrician.

You may even have your Industrial Training report in principle before you are done with year two and it shows employers that you are not work-shy, which is a valuable quality.

Electrical design jobs are in Nigeria but in building construction.
eg 2 storey buildings and above in most states now in nigeria needs M&E design before government approval especially Lagos.

The other design job you will see in a while is electrical programing (PLC or instrumentation) program to run mechanical equipments in factories.
Like some time ago i was working on a project that i needed a programmer.

this is the ABSOLUTE HEIGHT of ignorance and it shows the demise of nairaland.

once upon a time there were enough professionals on this forum to put the OP on the right path

now all we have are kids with no experience , no exposure and whose only exposure to engineering is the roadside technician who rewinds the burnt standing fan.

90% of sky scraper buildings you see in nigeria have their M&E designed by local firms
telecomms networks in nigeria are designed by local firms
power and control solutions for the energy industry [or as nigerians love to call it (oil and gas) are designed locally

@op, like i said, find someone around you who is working as an engineer. forget all that bs about connection. we are not talking about internship at mtn or shell here.

i did one of my IT attachment years ago at a tiny consulting firm in surulere. nothing fancy, poor salary, but i picked up stuff.
the most important thing you need to do is to learn to think like an engineer.
most of the engineers being lambasted as being somehow inferior to technicians did not learn to think.

i know this because i have worked with people like that. they have a problem/challenge and rather than sit down, analyze, think it through and come up with a solution to be deployed, they run to the nearest contractor/technician to provide a quotation.

your biggest asset is your brain, not your hands/brawn.

personally , i am not that big on certifications. nigerians love certifications and so what you have these days is people with certifications that they cannot back up. i am a cad geek and one day i was interviewing some dude with an autocad certification. i asked him about lisp, customising autocad, CUI, and drew a blank.

the same way, i have some guys who have gotten PMP [great achievement] but we are in a meeting arguing about project postmortems and they are clueless about risk and issue logs.

certifications are good, but if you are not use them as empircal evidence of knowledge and experience you already have, they may not take you far, though i would probably be impressed by a graduate with some certifications

lol i read alot of stuffs on NL that makes me laugh alot, some here are still doing that ego thing of Electrician not beign an Engineer and all,.All the same i love this boys thinking and believe he will take the sugar and leave the cane.

Now OP,It depends on where you want to be and how you want to do it,Electrical Electronics is broad also consider the most reqired skill in there.

(how it will work out for you(this is tested in the field)

1)Link up with Electrician(wiring),Electronics repaire guys and learn what they do and try beign good at it (dnt worry, knowledge you get from your education will surely put you above later so kill the ego and get dirty like someone said).

2)constantly research.

3)Combine your school knowledge, research and skills from the technician to be better at the work (like electricial will use fire to bend PVC pipe, you use bending machine, block or spring.why a certain transistor is used in a particular circuit and what else it can do for you including calculations).

4)Then get a trade test certificate(equivalent to City and guilds),try PLC too if you going into Power, control and automation if telecom go for CCNA.please dnt start with PMP cos if you hunt for job with it they will be calculating your years of experience and you will always be shoved off same for some other certifications.i personally wount take you as a Qc or PMP if you havent been in the field and first hand experience with equipments (how would you even know how long it takes to install or repaire them).

5)Read up and catch up,whatch (DIY) videos be creative and try to put your imagination to reality.AutoCAD too

What employers look for in fresh graduates of engineering is,are you trainable (this will put you above average if you can achieve all).and please dnt decieve your self you are an Engineer that you are meant to design and bring solutions cos you cnt design what you dnt know.
