All companies are looking for a way to collect user's data. it's the best way companies can give users information based on their interest; and besides, no company would love Google controlling everything, that's why for most Google's app, mobile manufacturers(LG, Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei and the likes) would have an alternative. Take, for instance, Android Pay. Samsung recently launched Samsung Pay which will definitely compete with Android Pay.
This same competition led to Samsung's formation of TouchWiz (It's own Android Skin), so as to add their apps to the basic applications on Android for them to be able to collect more data.
Data collection is the key.

like seriously bro ...the assistant is da bomb....I don't know if it can work on kitkat phones.....my bro de disturb me ..but I heard its 6.0 and up....lemme check this link

He can always try Google's Messaging app 'Allo', it has Google Assistant. If he seriously need the full Google Assistant, he can upgrade his phone through custom roms if the official update to 6.0 is not out for his phone.
