Pioneer in World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee has just received another accolade, regarded as one of his greatest in computing. The Association for Computing Machinery recently gave him the 2016 Turing Award, frequently considered the Nobel Prize of the computing industry. He’s receiving the award not just for inventing the basics of the web, but designing them in an elegant way.

Tim Berners-Lee an English computer scientist, is very known as the inventor of the World Wide Web which has transformed the world. Berners-Lee, a graduate from Oxford University with a degree in physics, first made the proposal for an information management system in March 1989, submitted a proposal for the World Wide Web while working at CERN, the European organization for nuclear research. He had noticed that scientists were having difficulty sharing information via the internet, which was still in its infancy at the time. He was successful in implementing the first successful communication between a Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) client and server via the Internet sometime around mid-November of that same year. The system he developed would not just allow the staffers exchange documents using readable text and embedded hyperlinks but would go on to change the way the world uses World Wide Web for the better.

The award given to Tim was named after the British mathematician Alan M. Turing, who articulated the mathematical foundation and limits of computing now comes with a $1 million prize, provided by Google.

“I’m humbled to receive the namesake award of a computing pioneer who showed that what a programmer could do with a computer is limited only by the programmer themselves,” Berners-Lee stated in a statement. “It is an honor to receive an award like the Turing that has been bestowed to some of the most brilliant minds in the world.”

Tim Berners-Lee is presently the director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which oversees the continued development of the Web is also the founder of the World Wide Web Foundation, and is a senior researcher and ha researcher at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).

The contributions of Tim Berners-Lee to computing in the world will continue to live after him, as virtually all the countries in the world rely on the World Wide Web for transmission of information across the internet.
