Nigeria airports to buy 3-D full body scanners

LAGOS, Nigeria – A Nigerian official says the nation will purchase 3-D, full body scanners after a man passed through Nigeria's biggest airport before trying to bring down a U.S.-bound flight on Christmas Day.
Civil Aviation Authority chief Harold Demuren says he hopes the machines will be installed early next year.

The announcement came hours after Dutch officials said they would immediately begin to use full body scanners on flights headed to the U.S. It is unclear if Nigeria will use the same technology as the Netherlands.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian, passed through Lagos and Amsterdam before attempting to detonate concealed explosives on a flight as it prepared to land in Detroit.

Forgive me for being a cynic, but this is another white elephant project in the making. The contract for scanner and installation would be awarded to some mischievious companies at inflated amounts. I wonder if we have adequately trained staff to use it anyway. And after the next administration comes in, the machine breaks down or all these bruhaha settles it will be dumped in one corner.
However it is potential bad news for drug pushers and trafikkers.

Exactly,,,,its typical of Nigerian to always wake up after havoc have taken its troll ****Reminds me of Gov Peter Obi of Anambra state who tried to repair a road only after a tanker have had an accident on the road(due to the roads bad nature) and human lives and property were gutted in the inferno that emerged.
My Take on the Project****Typical Nigerian Government Project = Scam,,, Some people will definitely make millions out of it illegally

This is rubbish atleast for now

There is no clear evidence, at what point Farouk had the PETN in his person: Yemen, Ethiopia, Ghana, Lagos or Amsterday?

The money is better spent to repair our roads that kills NIGERIANS everyday!

wrong. when did AMERICA become the world??

He was going to kill Americans and anyone that goes to that land.

We should focus more on resolving our numerous internal problems.

More people die in Nigeria every year than those even killed by 9/11 boyz.

am sorry if this might offend anyone, but we are just a joke ,our security is pathetic at the airports in the country as a whole. so we need a motivation to get things done, and i hope this isnt just another means to drain the the coffer's of the nation.

We're not secured i know but i think the world should leave us alone, especially USA. We know our problem and they should not affix more on us.

I totally agreed, it’s a pity that we seem to be so gullible in Africa.  Has anyone thought about the health issue involved with these scanners? Where is this information going to be stored? Who will have access and will the USA have access or introduce new laws that will give them the right to have access to the information – On terrorist grounds – (Now when it comes to using these scans for other medical researchers unknown to Nigeria, how will Nigeria control or know? And what will they do?

And, now we are so quick to deployed the scanners, even in London it's not installed in all airports, it’s still in trial, neither in the States, but Nigeria is willing for the people to become Guinea pigs, and then when all the issues are resolved and addressed, then the system will be installed fully in BRITAIN and the STATES, our leaders need to wake up.  With all the bombings in Europe, how many of the countries have installed these scanners prior to now? DONE…. ,

The only one now is been used for persons now travalling to the STATES.

You got that right. Why have 3-D Full Body scanners when you cannot keep track of criminals within Nigeria. no statistics, no database and definitely a dearth of trained security personnel to handle such infrastructure. Same thing when i heard Lagos was getting CCTV, so far we have not seen any statistics, it has not deterred area boys from harassing commuters on a minute-basis.

There are simply no record-keeping to make sense of any technology-driven  infrastructure make much sense or have an impact.

A laptop mold with an explosive resin compound can easily beat this device. pushing good money from the wrong angle

Americans are doing all these to protect themselves.

I am more interested in thousands of Nigerians dying every day.

If we have N1, we should rather spend it on the Nigerians.

America has money, let them buy the 'New Scanner' and send to us.

Afterall they donate 'war-ships' to monitor oil in Niger Delta!!!
