that one will be another loan. i think we have borrowed
enough we could do this ourselves.

This has to be a 'gift or donation' or they wait till we have the 'money' to buy it.

What happened to Nigerias satellite? Has it been found yet or gone missing again? What was the cost? $300 million/$400?

Benin - Lagos road is crying out for attention. etc etc.

Nigeria, we never learn. Should that be our immediate priority?
Re: Nigeria Airports To Buy 3-d Full Body Scanners by MrCrackles(m): 2:57pm On Dec 31, 2009
Nigeria will never learn. . .
Misplaced priorities was coined specially for the Country called Nigeria

In other words, there should be eight "8" scanners.  The US Government gave the Nigerian Government five (5) scanners ealier this year and they took them without installing them undecided Why?

they are no forcing us to buy it, we are only trying so we could say we have also beefed up our security. to avert cases like that again
Re: Nigeria Airports To Buy 3-d Full Body Scanners by Kx: 3:09pm On Dec 31, 2009
Another good source of revenue for those that will buy it.
We all know that 3 months from the date of deployment,
it will stop working.

Ask them what happened to all the radars and airport equipment they
ve been buying.
Re: Nigeria Airports To Buy 3-d Full Body Scanners by cibilola(f): 3:14pm On Dec 31, 2009
if Nigerian airports are going to have the full body scanner machine, then i can assure you that some passengers will not be using it. Infact, with Nigerian security at the airports, you can bypass all this with a simple N2000 handshake every time you see a security "so-called" personnel. . .

So I will recommend that to improve the security measures in our country, first we have to get rid of all those red-eyed, hungry-looking thieves in the airports and replace them with people more sincere (i don't mean the police, they will only demand for more money at check-points - probably with a shakabula to your head)
Re: Nigeria Airports To Buy 3-d Full Body Scanners by BrutusOne: 3:27pm On Dec 31, 2009
Naija gov will only purchase the body scanners if the US presures the Yar'Adua (null!) government. . . it is more likely that it'll be in the budget, but implimentation will never see the light of day. We all know the drill. . . let's just hope and pray there isn't another Umar.

ummmmmmmmmmm didn't america dash nigeria 3 scanners last year (thats what the FBI said on boxing day during a new segment)

so this is another reason for them to eat money as they already have these scanners sitting somewhere

funny enough na now day break?

Body scanning technology has been available for a long time. Considering the many news of Nigeria being potential breeding ground for terrorists and the drug issue, you would think we would NOT have to wait for the US to know that we need to seriously improve security even at our airports. We have been getting millions from the country for sometime now to implement security and look what we still have at our airports. Then we wonder why they feel the need to come in to do it themselves.

Like I said, I do hope this time around is not handled by “Nigerians” but by experts who can work on this till we get our act together since that is the only way to ensure we do not send as much off our men, and women, to be BEHEADED in countries where drug trafficking continues to invite the death penalty, and also bombers from our port. I can imagine we have been on the terrorists most porous fly zones for some time for them to have sent this bomber dude all the way from yemen, back to Nigeria to fly our even with all the red flags. They didn’t even bother to spend time training him much considering it is now known that he basically did most everything wrong. See how much regard Al-Qaida had for the man.

So where are the four scanners presented?
They were donated over a year ago but it has not been used. . . .And now they want to buy an additional 3
Additional three when we dont even know the whereabouts of the ones we have. . . .
How are we even sure they have not been stolen or sold off by some thieving vagabond

Nigeria is one 'great' country.

Disasters have to happen b4 we profer solutions.
So we never needed this scanner had this incidence not happened.
Just as the VP is just summoning a 'meeting' to 'rescue' the retrenchment situation on the Banks after about 4,000 employees have lost their jobs in the Nations most-engaging sector. Yet yesterday we heard another 800 had joined the un-employed from Oceanic Bank.

In Nigeria, the word PROACTIVE exists but only in written form.

Biuldings will collapse b4 we set up a committee to enforce regulation on the standards of buildings;
People will die in accidents b4 we call for special FEC meetings to approve and award contracts for road rehabilitation;
Cholera outbreak will occur and thousands die b4 we will think of providing portable water for our citizens;
Less than 10% of our students will pass entrance exams b4 there is a call of the overhaul of the educational sector;

The list goes on and on,

We need our own Mandela, Ghandi, Nyerere, Nkurumah, or even Obama, for these times.

Re: Nigeria Airports To Buy 3-d Full Body Scanners by Pifa: 5:18pm On Dec 31, 2009
Let's set the records straight here.

First of all, the body scanners are relatively new devices developed by a private company for the US Transportation Security Administration. They are just being introduced into US airports. Even in the US, less than 50 of these machines are in use in perhaps 20 airports around the country. That explains why the Schiphol airport didn't have one at the time the muttalab slowpoke passed through their airport.

Secondly – and this is directed at those who are saying America should leave you alone – there is no such thing as an isolated country anymore. When you're part of an international community, you have an obligation to protect that community within your borders. It is part of international agreement that airports cooperate with one another in screening out miscreants who might want to commit terrorist acts, export narcotics, violate currency, passport or visa regulations, etc. Nigeria is part of the international community and by default, it has obligations to meet.

Furthermore, for those screaming “leave Nigeria alone,” it would preserve your integrity, if you would leave America, Europe, SA, Asia and other places alone. Stop stampeding over yourselves to get student or residency visas to these places! Then, you would have practiced what you preached. Stop being hypocritical, folks.

Now for those who worry about the safety of these devices, I would remind you that you get more harmful radiation from the sun than you would get from these scanners, even if you travel frequently. The operational principle behind these machines is what is known as millimeter-wave scanning. It's similar to a 3-D CAT Scan except that it uses millimeter radio waves. A variant of these machines use low-level X-ray similar to fluoroscopy, but the MMW machines are the ones airports will deploy.

Long and short of it is that the millimeter wave machines are safe. They use different wavelength than microwaves, so they will not fry your tissue. Also, the time you spend under these machines is less than 30 seconds.

The primary concern is not of safety but privacy. The machine conducts what is known as a virtual strip search. It's like stripping you na.ked without taking your clothes off.

The machines will be manned by humans who will see your virtual image on a screen but will not see you, the person. Your face will also be blurred. The screeners will be housed in a room away from the security-screening lines, so they will have no face-to-face contact with the passengers they are screening.

To allay fears of voyeurism, there was a suggestion at one time that only same-sex screeners be used, but I don't know if this was ever accepted by the authorities. I've seen images produced by these machines, so I'll say this: Only a sicko would get his or her bosoms (get my drift?) by watching these images. The type of image these things produce will make you want to move on quickly to the next. You won't believe how unflattering most people look without their clothes. . .nothing like the magazine photographs.

To BabyGirl_1 who is worried about storing the information from these scanners:
The machines have software that will delete the images soon after the screener clears you, so no worries there. But, there is no guarantee against abuses. Even if the images can be retrieved, no one will know it's you since your face is blurred out.

The argument in favor of using these machines is that they can detect both metallic and non-metallic objects. If mutallab (no capitalization for a terrorist) had gone through one of these machines, a diligent or eagle-eyed screener might have seen the anomaly in his underwear and flagged him for a real strip search. But that last statement relies heavily on the diligent and/or eagle-eyed qualification. The machine can flag the anomaly, but a tired and/or inattentive screener may ignore or neglect the warning, and the bas.tard terrorist would still get through.

One last thing:
To Otawa and those who say this is a US problem and Nigeria should focus on its internal problem, I ask this: Would you say the same thing, if your loved one had been on that plane?

Body scanners are not necessarily new devices at airports. If you are speaking of the particular kind the US is looking to use, maybe, but some airports around the world have had scanners installed as long as way back as five years ago. Schipol already had some installed prior to this incident but is working on having more installed so all passengers will have to be scanned.

We ought not to wait for America to tell us the right thing to do. This technology has been available for a while now. The world does not wait for the US to adopt new technology that could potentially help save the lives of it's own citizens and citizens of other countries. If anything, with our drug problems, we should have gotten this technology long ago. Well, scratch that!! We did get 4 donated to us, only, God knows where they are . ROFLMAO!!

Yes, technically, you're right, but I think those devices use X-ray backscatter (I think I said relatively new). They are not as revealing as the MMW devices. The MMW scanner are just being deployed in the US after trials in selected airports around the country. The technology itself is not new, but the application is.
