What Does It Mean To Be A Professional? by uzygirl(f): 3:51pm On Jan 24, 2007
Dear Nairalanders,

I am bothered about the decision of a friend of mine who is preparing for JAMB.
She is a science student and had always dreamt of being a doctor.
Her problem started when she wrote the JAMB exams last year and scored 156, a far cry from the minimum requrement of 200 for some universities in Nigeria. She concluded then that she would not have the brains to study Medicine and decided to opt for the medical sciences.
Now she has changed her mind and has decided to study accounting, because according to her, "it is a professional course".
This is partly due to the pressure from her father, an accomplished lawyer. He is of the school of thought that the only learned professionals in the past were doctors, lawyers and clergymen. Reason being that they were taught in latin. Ever heard of that?
Well she has decided to go for accounting, a "professional course", which in her opinion would be less stressful.

What advice should I give her?

Tell her to give it whatever it takes to study what she really loves no matter what pressure she faces cos when she will really be tested in the future her love for that field is what is going sustain her. Good luck to her.
