LAGOS, Sunday

One hundred legal practitioners under the auspices of Lawyers of Consciences have given President Umaru Yar’Adua a January 31, 2010 deadline to resign or be removed by the National Assembly.

The group has warned that it will mobilise their learned colleagues and the Nigerian electorate to “take their destiny into their hands by any legitimate means possible.”

The president has been away in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for forty days owing to ill health brought on by an inflammation of the membrane surrounding his heart. The president also has a history of kidney disease.

Arising from its Annual General Meeting held on December 30, 2009, the organisation in a communiqué stated that it had arrived at the decision after undertaking “a surgical appraisal of the comatose state of the nation.’’

The group stated that if by the expiration of its ultimatum of January 31, President Yar’Adua has not come back to actively assume and perform his functions as the president, and he neither resigns nor is removed by the National Assembly in the application of sections 144 and 146 of the 1999 Constitution to enable the vice president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan be sworn-in, it should not be held responsible for whatever may result from such legitimate action(s).

In an open reference to the civil protests carried out by Pakistani lawyers in 2007, which contributed to the overthrow of the country’s military leader, General Pervez Musharraf, the group prayed that the brave and revolutionary action(s) of lawyers and their learned brothers in Pakistan is not replicated in Nigeria, “with its may-not-be-too-good consequences for our fledging democracy.”

About time some group of individuals do something about this ridulous situation we Nigerians find ourselves in.
I just hope that this their zeal doesn't wane.

I can't imagine that the NASS don't even have the balls to do what is right for Nigeria and for Nigerians.

we speak like uninformed folks.
we saw obasanjo practically selected all the candidates in 2007(election turned selection).
if u look at all our politicians, they lacked credibility. they are disabled and can't act.
they are tied to stakes and cannot fly.
none of them won election rather they were slected by the same man who selected and imposed yar adua on us.
they lack what it takes to ask questions because all their files are in ottah farm.
if any of them asks questions, he will be reminded on how he was installed and the possiblity of been sacked by pdp as an anti party.
this project of installing a weak and disabled politicians all over the country by obasanjo led pdp is a national project and will continue till success is achieved unless God intervens.
we all know david mark, the senate president and his story into the house hence he dare not rebel and the story continues.
