Ijora In The Throes Of Thugs
Ijora in Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State is now a terrible place to live. Not because the place is a slum or that it plays host to a pocket of criminals, but because it has been taken over by political thugs, who misbehave and terrorise innocent residents with impunity. They go on rampage at anytime with broken bottles, daggers and other dangerous weapons. At first, their major targets were mostly people suspected to be political opponents of the ruling party in the council, but they soon widened their dragnet to include innocent people because they enjoy the protection of the powers-that-be.

Several complaints have been made about the unruly behaviour of these thugs to the police, but whenever any of them is arrested, he comes out within hours as a result of the intervention of their godfathers.

As it is today, majority of the residents in Ijora have become endangered species and as such they watch their shoulders when moving on the roads and are extra careful when discussing any matter that has to do with politics in the council.

The political thugs always boast that they could maim and kill anybody and go scot-free. And on several occasions, they have turned the threat into reality by maiming people, some of who have nothing to do politics. They ferment trouble unnecessarily and so the situation in Ijora now is unpredictable. Instances abound where people who left their homes few hours ago found it extreme difficult to come back because the thugs were on rampage.

As a result of the precarious situation that persists in the area, the residents are appealing to the Lagos State Governor, Babtunde Fashola and the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Marvel Akpoyibo, to come to their aid and reign in these criminal elements who parade themselves as political supporters.
