Earth Day 2017’s Campaign is Environmental and Climate Literacy!


Environment means everything around, to a living being.
It comprises the set of natural, social and cultural values existing in a place and at a particular time, that influence in the life of the human being and in the generations to come i.e. it is not only the space in which life develops, but it also includes living beings, objects, water, soil, air and the relations between them as well as intangibles like culture. 

It is however regrettable that the common African man knows as little as possible about the concept of the environment, most of them literate, or have certificates to throw better light. It is rather equally sad that our educational curriculum does to little, if at all, to accommodated any real form of environmental literacy.

A two year old in the developed world knows what is called recycling, the idea is very clear to this child but the African PhD holder doesn't. He may know the definition but doesn't even know if it is practicable or applicable in any way. Deforestation is a more conversant term to the African literate community, they are the middle and high class of the society. The upper class mostly use concrete slabs (popularly known as interlocking) to floor their compounds and if course no real vegetation can survive there, no greening, no tree planting, nothing. The middle class live in a less luxurious accommodation and see to it that most of the trees in their habitation is brought down so it can accommodate larger houses or boys quarters erected to avail them other sources of income. Now tell me how much of deforestation they actually can relate to?

Deforestation is not singularly all about the depletion of forests.
