Calorie deficit is a synonym for weight loss, alright well maybe not actually but it's literally the same thing because, in order for someone to lose weight by which I mean fat, of course, he/she needs a calorie deficit and what is that?

A calorie deficit is a loss, the word deficit refers to a loss, such as an insufficiency and when it comes to weight loss it means a fat deficit which is when you take in your body less fat than you actually use, as an energy source I mean. Your body takes carbohydrates and calories, it converts them and it produces chemical energy which is produced by the mitochondria, an organ found in each and every cell in your body.

This chemical energy in scientific terms is known as ATP which stands for adenosine triphosphate and this ATP is used by each cell in its tasks, its functions and you use it in your daily tasks or activities. Now, depending on how active an individual is, his body will need to produce more ATP or energy, right? It's obvious because of physical activity, as well as cognitive activity, require energy. If you are not that active, you won't need that much, it's like a car which if you drive it a lot, you will need more fuel/gas, right? Well there you have it, it's the same with your body. Now, what happens when a person is not that active yet he or she takes a lot of fuel, more than he or she needs, into his or her body? (by fuel I mean calories, carbs, fat of course)

Well those nutrients will not be used so what happens is the fat gets deposited into fat deposits, it's your adipose tissue, right under your layers of skin that are where extra fat which you don't use is deposited for later use, a later use that might not really come and so fat keeps getting deposited, you'd be amazed how much fat can get deposited which leads to obesity, there are some extreme cases out there of people that are even unable to move and perform basic tasks because of obesity. Now, if you do the opposite and instead of receiving extra calories into your body you actually decrease the calorie intake, your body will lose weight. You can lose weight just by making changes in your diet, however, if you also get more active, your body will also need to produce more "fuel" and it will use deposited fat to produce that fuel, reducing your fat deposits, reducing the adipose tissue and making you fit.

That is the science behind it and it's quite simple when you know what you are doing, the important thing is to stick to the plan, eating healthy and being active and once you do get fit, if you want to remain so you can do so just through your diet, you no longer need a calorie deficit, you just need to consume an adequate quantity of calories and not get into a calorie surplus because if that happens you risk gaining unwanted fat again.
