Popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has added his voice to the recent pronoucements by the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido II

Gumi stated that the Emir's statement was unfair to millions of unmarried women who are jobless

He was reacting to the Emir's comments that he would introduce laws in the state assembly that would bar people who are incapable of sustaining two wives from doing so.

Popular Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has added his voice to the recent pronoucements by the Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido II.

In an interview with Vanguard, Gumi stated that the Emir's statement was unfair to millions of unmarried women who are jobless.
He was reacting to the Emir's comments that he would introduce laws in the state assembly that would bar people who are incapable of sustaining two wives from doing so.

His words: ''I have been following some pronouncements by the Emir of Kano of recent that border on Islamic religion and culture. What I will say is that Islamic position on issues is well entrenched in Islamic literature.

''This book here, The Message, is more than one thousand years old. In it, every subject on Islamic law is discussed. I want the Emir and others to put their minds at rest. Nobody can interpret or change Islamic law. What we need to change is the environment so that people find it conducive.''

''When it comes to marriage, what Islam says is that whoever has power to marry should marry. Islam does not allow a society where there is prostitution. Since Islam proscribes prostitution, adultery and fornication, the moment a girl becomes mature biologically, Islam opens the door that if you want to marry, then marry.

''But if you bring a law that says a girl should not marry until when she gets to eighteen years, I tell you, at the age of sixteen, a girl begins to have sexual desire which will be pushing her like fire.

''In Islam, you do not give out a girl in marriage except when you ask her permission. So if the girl is ready to marry, she should marry. It does not affect her education or social life. You can still be married and be going to school.''

Gumi said the Emir’s argument is that you should not marry more than one wife if you cannot take care of them is not a religious issue but a social issue.

He said: ''There are unmarried women in millions who are jobless. If you say ‘this man, you are poor, don’t marry her’, he stays poor and does not marry her, while she is still struggling, she is in a worse situation than if she marries the man.

''What these poor men do is a social service to the society because poor men have more wives that rich men. These women are not there redundant. Each woman is doing something, maintaining herself but under the umbrella of a man who makes sure that she does not become a prostitute.''

Sheikh Gumi is saying that the men will marry the women for sex only. But forgets to talk about what happens to the products of that sexual encounter. So this poor man will have many children by his jobless wives and leave them to become almajiri for the public to cater for?

and this is among a people, majority of whom are wrongly against contraception.

Yes, it is a social problem. And that is why in Islam a poor man should not even have a wife, let alone have multiple.

If the nip had been put in the bud long ago, the problem possibly would have been solved.

So what can be done?
The economy should be improved. People who must marry so that they are not involved in prostitution can consider contraception. Abstinence should be preached to young girls.

Finally, Sanusi should complain less and act more. He keeps pointing fingers and chooses aspects of Islam that suit him.

I like Emir Sanusi, he's the kind of Muslim leader we need, a reform leader, he knows the problems in Muslim communities and he's trying his best to reform it.

How does this sheikh knows a girl below 18 is ready for marriage, what does she knows about marriage? The only thing they do best is forcing or pressuring a young girl to marry one old Alhaji , a girl below 18 is not mentally ready for marriage or take responsibilities, this sheikh is talking about jobless women what about jobless men? Is he going to sponsor these men that are married to multiple wives with dozens of children roaming in the street? This is was Sanusi want to control.

Sanusi does not say men should not marry, he only wants to reduce the poverty that led to almajiri in the northern Nigeria which is polygamy, a man should be financially OK before taking another wife that's what the Emir message is all about, this troglodyte sheikh can't see the reasoning and good behind the move, he only thinks like an ancient arabia and some ancient practice, we are in 2017 Mr Gumi, things have changed.

I'm born into a polygamy home, so I know well about things in polygamy.

How can a child bride below 18 cope with study, what happens when she's pregnant? Is she doing private study or what? Does he care to know the psychological effect? undecided
