The federal government of Nigerians have been urged to make sure Nigeria is return to True and Purposeful Federalism in the overall interest of the nation.
This was contained in the inaugural meeting of Shadow Nigeria, a Socio-political group in the country
The group observed that majority of the people of Southern Nigeria are in support of Restructuring and fiscal federalism, but the Northerner part of Nigeria has constantly rejected this idea, and totally not in agreement. It has not been determined yet if northern Nigeria is Genuinely Risk Averse, or just the elite not willing to relinquish their stronghold on the resources coming from the center.
It is equally very worrisome because this is the region with the highest rate of poverty and unemployment.
Take the issue of Boko haram, It would have been impossible for the dreaded group to exist for this long if the revenue of both the local and state government is directly tied its Internally Generated Revenue, IGR. This mutually beneficial arrangement would have made the political elites in the North East to nip the ugly development of insurgency in the bud, and not allow it to fester. With fiscal federalism, which is directly tied to tax revenue from the people, all stakeholders in the region would have made sure there is peace in the region. The issue of free lunch (complete lack of initiative) would have been eliminated.

Another blackhole in this whole unending conflict is, what has happened to the funds that the federal govt has been releasing to all the Local Government in the North East (those directly affected by insurgency) in the last 7 years of Boko Haram? Since local government administration in the region has been reduced to council official operating from the state capital, how on earth will the leaders of the North East particularly the council members see this as urgent assignment that must be accomplished?
To the country at large, the blatant release of monthly bailout in form of allocation, is just another avenue to enrich the political class, because the money can never trickle down. As the political elites are becoming richer, the people will be more impoverish. This can never be sustainable and is counter productive.
True federalism gives the people a sense of belonging. The earlier the Northern oligarchy and the political elites of Nigeria listen to the voice of reason, the better, the group submitted .
