Musiliu Obanikoro, former minister of (state) defence, has perfected plan to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, multiple sources told Newsbreak.Ng.

The website also learned Obanikoro’s planned defection is likely to ignite another firestorm in the frosty relationship between Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the supremo of APC-Lagos politics, and his estranged protégé, Babatunde Fashola, currently minister of power, works and housing.

According to a source, Tinubu showed reluctance to Obanikoro joining the APC, but Fashola saw in it an opportunity to oppose his former godfather and consolidate his budding political power base. Fashola reportedly assured Obanikoro of Lagos West senatorial seat ticket in 2019, after the exit of the district’s current representative, Senator Olamilekan Adeola.

Based on the political permutation, Obanikoro will allegedly be contesting from Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos, one of the local councils under the Lagos West senatorial district. This website also learned of the involvement of Lagos monarch, Oba Akiolu, who was brutally opposed to Obanikoro in the build-up to the 2015 governorship and presidential elections.

“Obanikoro’s defection is not without the involvement of Lagos paramount monarch, Oba Riliwan Akiolu”, said our source.

“We learnt he was in Iga Idugaran (the Lagos monarch’s palace) when he issued a directive that we ensure victory for the APC in the forthcoming local government election.

“He equally promised to make some of us supervisory councilors”, our source added.

In addition, Kola Balogun, who leads the faction Obanikoro belonged among the four factions of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos state, was also said to have concluded plan to defect along with him. Balogun was said to have confirmed it to his close aides at a meeting.

“Chief Kola Balogun was in the know of Koro’s (Obanikoro’s moniker) defection and he also gave approval for executive members of our faction of the Lagos PDP exco to decamp as well. As it is, the PDP in Lagos is finished, only a carcass,” said our source, a PDP leader.

The development was said to have spurred party financier, Senator Buruji Kashamu, (PDP, Ogun East) to summon a meeting on Friday. The meeting reportedly deliberated on the defection and duplicitous character of leaders of the PDP towards the APC.
