A pregnant woman collapsed at Aka Community Secondary School, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, during teachers’ recruitment on Monday.

It was learnt that government officials who noticed when the pregnant woman collapsed, quickly separated other pregnant women and nursing mothers from the queues.

They were also attended to by nurses.

Our correspondent who monitored the exercise observed that there was chaos as some people pretended to be teachers in the school and wanted to sneak into the queues, while soldiers whipped applicants to control the mammoth crowd.

One of the applicants, Mr. Aniekan Udofia, said the pregnant woman had been revived, adding that he had been in the in the queues since 7am before he could get the recruitment form around 3.46pm.

He said, “Since getting my Nigerian Certificate in Education in 2009, I have yet to get employment.”

At Ikot Ekpene centre, our correspondent gathered that six applicants collapsed in queues as thousands scrambled for the recruitment forms.

At Essien Udim Local Government Area, politicians were accused of hijacking the forms, leaving only 20 for the area.

An unnamed officer of the State Universal Basic Education Board in the area said he had run out of the allotted forms, leaving thousands of applicants in the area stranded.

A board member of SUBEB, Otuekong Bassey, said the pregnant and nursing mothers were no longer allowed to queue.

He added that those who could not get the forms on Monday had been asked to be at the centre on Tuesday.

He said, “The atmosphere is tense because people are anxious of getting jobs after long years of graduation.

“We started work as early as 9am, and we have gone far. The exercise is supposed to last for three days.

“There has never been any case of collapse, nobody has collapsed. The whole thing is orderly with the help of the security agencies.

“The only problem we have is that everybody wants to be the first; they do not want to exercise patience.”

The Akwa Ibom State Government had advertised that it wanted to recruit 3,000 teachers into the state’s primary schools.
