Gunmen believed to be nomadic Fulani herdsmen killed eight people in central Nigeria, police said Tuesday, in the latest violence overgrazing and land rights.

The attack on two farming villages in the Logo local government area of Benue state happened overnight Sunday to Monday, state police commissioner Bashir Makama told AFP.

“Eight people were killed by Fulani cattle rearers who invaded the two farming villages,” he added.

Trouble erupted when the villagers — who are predominantly farmers — tried to prevent the herdsmen from moving their cattle through their farms, Makama said.

Reported death tolls from such attacks frequently vary between the official account and local people.

Newspapers said between 10 and 20 people were killed in the attack, which is the latest in a region plagued by the long -running conflict.

In March, at least 17 people, mostly women and children, were killed in similar violence in Benue state, which lies in the religiously mixed Middle Belt but is predominantly Christian.

The worst such violence occurred in February 2016 when hundreds of people were said to have been killed and about 1,000 homes destroyed in the Agatu area of the state.

The Fulani were said to have retaliated for a previous killing of their kinsmen by the local farmers.

President Muhammadu Buhari , a Hausa – speaking Fulani from Muslim – majority northern Nigeria, has proposed the creation of grazing land to prevent further clashes.

What's the protest for? Killings, corruption, high cost of governance, failed government/governance or Nigeria as a failed country?

You people need to put an end to this ones and for all. Concerned people, organisations - I dont know- capable individuals - need to organise protests in every state in the Federation. Nigerians simply must not tolerate this anymore, Bleep your leaders and frigging spastic state governors.

These terrorists or whatever they call themselves going around killing farmers all over Nigeria. If there's any course that can unite all Nigerians (since most states have suffered some form of "Fulani" attack); well, this is it. If you ordinary Nigerians can organise a massive, massive National protests over this issue, you'll be on your way to having the makings of the potential to change the system you're always complaining about.

There has to be a watershed momernt, it dose not have to be an earthquake, becuse you cant go on acssepting these farmers killings.

Who will you be protesting to? The president is in limbo, the mere commissioner is now a mere coordinator and a Fulani herdsmen is still in charge, don't risk army shooting you like they killed innocent IPOB peaceful demonstrators.

You guys are just making noise, when GEJ introduced ranching in the confab, where were you then? Didn't you know he was framed and removed before he will fight the Fulani herdsmen. Now you even made things worse by voting a herdsman into aso rock, and now you want to protest. Just wear helmet and body armour.
