Gabriel Suswam's Sickness Stalls Corruption Trial by Nobody: 11:13am On May 10, 2017
The absence on May 9, 2017, of Gabriel Suswam, a former Benue State governor before a Federal High Court, Abuja, stalled his ongoing trial, as his counsel, Ahmed Raji, SAN, told the court that he was on admission at a hospital.

"Suswam fell ill after he was released by the Department of State Services, DSS, on May 8," Raji told Justice A.R. Mohammed, who is presiding over the nine-count charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, against him, and his then Commissioner of Finance, Omodachi Okolobia, for allegedly diverting N3.1 billion state funds.

While presenting the medical report to the court, Raji urged the trial judge to grant an adjournment to allow his client time to recuperate so that he would be present in court for the continuation of his trial.
The prosecution, led by O.A. Atolagbe, did not oppose the application but reminded the court that Suswam was also not in court at the last sitting of March 28, 2017.

"The learned counsel who appeared for the defendant informed his lordship that the first defendant was at the time being detained by the DSS, and he has now confirmed that he has been released," Atolagbe said.
He further told the court that Raji only informed him of Suswam's illness "this morning and that he has been hospitalised".

The trial judge who went through the said report ordered that Suswam's counsel should furnish the prosecution with it.

After reading it, the prosecution raised no objection for an adjournment based on the content of the report, noting that Raji, being a senior counsel could not have been telling a lie about Suswam's ill-health.

Audu Anuga, counsel to Okolobia, who unlike Suswam was present in court, also aligned himself with Raji, applying for an adjournment.

Justice Mohammed, thereafter, adjourned to June 21 and 22, 2017 "for a continuation of trial".

How come they all fall sick whenever they ask them to come and account for the money that disappeared under their watch?
Re: Gabriel Suswam's Sickness Stalls Corruption Trial by emmyhumble(m): 12:38pm On May 10, 2017
This is why i dont believe in our judiciary! They are only good when it comes to comon criminals and the poor. The Judge should have asked for the evidence of his sickness claim because I don't believe him at all which clearly shows that he is guilty as charged! Or The judge would have send him back to custody upon his discharge from the hospital pending the time of the case that na if him dey any hospital self. No be just yesterday we see him pixs for the this same plat form the celebrate him release by the DSS? So over night Ebola or laser fever don visit am?

Those people just the Cary us play self

Nigerian masses are too docile and too divided to fight against these thieves. Nigeria's sad situation has come to stay. Nigeria is beyond redemption. Even the Devil has more hope than Nigeria

Throughout this man's rule in Benue State, he was hale and hearty eating Benue people's yam. Now it is time to account for how many tubers of yam he ate, he is now forming sickness.

If not for the bleeped state this country is in, this man should have been judged on a stretcher. If a breastfeeding woman can face a judge, why not Suswam.

Justice delayed is most times denied in Nigeria...When are we going to see a corrupt politician sentenced?

When is it gonna become obvious to our security agencies and all involved in matters of financial crime such as this that these claims of ill health and hospitalization are nothing more than mere delay tactics? Something has to be done to halt this unwholesome trend and fast. Can't believe we are still falling for this!
