It has come to public glare how some people claim that the Western Nigeria Television was the first TV broadcast in Africa. The WNTV was established in Oct 1959 under Chief Obafemi Awolowo.By 1977 there were other TV broadcasts leading to the merging of all into NTV and later NTA.Later AIT emerged as first ptivate TV.
The TV industry has come a long way and it is growing but the question now for posterity:Is the Awolowo WNTV of 1959 the first in Africa?
pls facts only.

most of the claims r on public TV and gatherings. Just finished watching Gbenga Aroleba on AIT Focus Nigeria, and one of the guests an educated one and a newspaper editor made that claim that WNTV was the first in Africa.

This should be evidence based...till a contrary or superior evidence is produced.

What claim?

He stated a fact and you decided to challenge it without any iota of proof?

Some few seconds on Google produced those links I posted. Do yourself a favour and go through them.

WNTV was the first TV station in all of Africa, starting in 1959 (Egypt did not start until 1960). From what I remember transmissions were only from 6pm until 10pm and were almost entirely of American programs but with many locally produced adverts about road safety which were both highly entertaining but also forceful in their message. I have failed to find any examples of these on the Internet. An interesting point is that the WNTV logo included "First in Africa", but when ENTV started in 1960 their logo included "Second to none".
