35-Year-Old Nigerian Big Boy Chukwuemaka Ibe Jailed For Life In Cambodia For Bringing Kilogrammes Of Cocaine Into The Country From Brazil Via Thailand, I Did Not Know It Was Drug That What Was Inside, He Claims.



Two foreign men were jailed for life yesterday after bringing nearly five kilos of cocaine from Brazil to Cambodia.
Adrian-Calin Varadi, 40, from Romania, and Nigerian Chukwuemaka Ibe, 35, were arrested by Interior Ministry anti-drug police in collaboration with customs and immigration officers at Phnom Penh International Airport in August last year.
Phnom Penh Municipal Court presiding judge Im Vannak said the pair denied drug trafficking but offered no real evidence to establish their innocence.
Major Sin Sophal of the anti-drug police said Mr Varadi was arrested at the airport after customs checked his bags and found 14 packages of cocaine hidden inside.
After questioning Mr Varadi, police arrested Mr Ibe at the City Centre Hotel in Phnom Penh the same evening.
Mr Ibe had travelled from Thailand to pick up the drugs from Mr Varadi and take them to Thailand. Police did not find any drugs on him.
Maj Sophal said police had been tipped off about the drug run by the US Drug Enforcement Administration office in Brazil.
Police received the information a day before the arrests.
The two accused said outside court the verdict was unjust because they were not drug traffickers. They said they would appeal it to a higher court soon.
Mr Varadi said the drugs belonged to an unidentified man in Brazil. The unidentified man paid the cost of his travel, food and accommodation, and promised him 5,000 euros ($5,500) per kilo from Mr Ibe in Phnom Penh.
“I am not a drug trafficker,” he said.
“The reason I decided to accept this work was because I needed the money.”
Mr Ibe said also he was not a drug trafficker but worked only for pay.
He said a Nigerian friend named James in Bangkok paid him 10,000 Thai baht (about $300) to travel to Cambodia and receive a package from a person in Phnom Penh. He said he was not aware the package was drugs.
He was arrested after Mr Varadi called him and told to pick up the package at the City Centre Hotel.
Mr Vannak said the Nigerian man named James had not been charged because the court could not establish his real identity or whereabouts.
