What is your HIV status?

When last did you or your family test for HIV?
Do you know the implication of being HIV positive with or without your family knowing?

Did you know you can transmit HIV ignorantly to your family and friends?

Find out more about HIV on this World Aids Vaccine Day

AIDS stands for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. AIDS is not a virus but a set of symptoms (or syndrome) caused by the HIV virus.

A person is said to have AIDS when their immune system is too weak to fight off infection, and they develop certain defining symptoms and illnesses. This is the last stage of HIV, when the infection is very advanced, and if left untreated will lead to death.

How is HIV Transmitted?
Having sex with an infected person who is not on treatment and has a detectable viral load.
Sharing a needle with someone who's infected
Being born when their mother is infected, or a child drinking the breast milk of an infected mother
Getting a transfusion of infected blood

Prevention of HIV
1. Abstain from sexual activity or be in a long-term mutually monogamous relationship with an uninfected partner.

2. Limit your number of sex partners. The fewer partners you have, the less likely you are to encounter someone who is infected with HIV or another STD.

3. Correct and consistent condom use. Latex condoms are highly effective at preventing transmission of HIV and some other sexually transmitted diseases. “Natural” or lambskin condoms do not provide sufficient protection against HIV infection.

4. Get tested and treated for STDs and insist that your partners do too.
