A fibroid is a harmless tumour of the womb. It is harmless meaning that a woman can have a fibroid and not be aware of it (manifest any symptoms) throughout her reproductive life. Fibroid arises from the tissue of the womb and can occur at different locations in the womb: fibroids can develop just under the tissue lining the wall of the cavity of the womb, protruding into this cavity; they can occur within the muscular wall of the womb; and they can develop on the outside wall of the womb where they stick out like balls on the surface of the womb.

Fibroids commonly occur in women in their 30s and 40s; fibroids hardly occur in women during the adolescent years. As a woman, you have a higher risk of having fibroids during your reproductive years if you are black (your race), are obese, have a family history of fibroid (your mom or grandmother had fibroid), saw your first menstrual period at a younger age (at the age of 7 or 8 ), or you consume red meat a lot and take less of green vegetables

Fibroids can shrink on their own depending on their sizes because they arise due to the action varying hormonal levels and other factors in the woman (such as her genetic makeup, her race, when she first saw her menses---we have studied all these); they also disappear after menopause when the woman's hormone--oestrogen--falls significantly. However, if the woman develops worrisome symptoms from fibroids, we advise them to see their obstetrician and gynaecologist for treatment which can be with drugs or surgery. I'm a College of Medicine, University of Ibadan and University College Hospital, Ibadan (UCH) trained medical doctor; we doctors have studied fibroids and know the various mechanisms of their development and the right treatment for them. Fibroids are not treated with herbs; herbs damage the liver and kidneys. Please stop telling people that some so-called natural and pure herbal medicine cures fibroids when you don't understand the mechanisms of fibroids. Once again, herbs damage the liver and kidneys many years after taking them, and they don't cure fibroids. And it is only medical doctors who are licensed to treat health conditions.

Depending on where it is growing, it is possible for a fibroid to prevent or interfere with conception. In some cases a fibroid may stop a fertilised egg from implanting properly in the uterus. This is can result in an early miscarriage. Women who successfully fall pregnant, despite having a fibroid, are more at risk of developing complications later in their pregnancy or during birth

Fibroids hardly interfere or prevent conception (the fertilisation of an ovulated egg by sperm cell). The probability of infertility (the inability to achieve conception by a couple after one full year after regular, unprotected, penetrative, vaginal sexual intercourse) resulting from a fibroid is very very low (around 2%); in fact, when we talk about infertility in obstetrics and gynaecology, fibroids are never attributed as a cause because studies have not shown them to cause infertility but to interfere with pregnancy (8 to 10% of pregnancies) ONLY after conception has occurred.
