CHAPTER 1

Debra stared at the ceiling for moments that felt like several hours, studying the patterned rows of rectangles that ran across its length. She counted the horizontals rows, and then the vertical rows, and the horizontal rows once again. Her eyelids fluttered intermittently to the flickering light emitted by the scotching yellow bulb dangling back and forth to the blow of the noiseless fan. She was completely removed from the act occurring on top of her.

A canal groan of pleasure suddenly awoke her drowsy mind...and she became aware once again - aware of the potbellied client withdrawing his organ from the orifice of her vulva. Scurrying to her feet, she pulled down her tight tank top, and stretched her hand to retrieve her panties. For a curvy lady involved in the world's oldest profession, her choice of underwear were really vanilla. Then again, Debra was not one to don a dress, accessory, or underwear if it was not comfortable. She wore her vanilla panties, and proceeded to put on her jean bum shorts, forcing it across her round waist. God I have gained weight, she thought, stealing glimpses of her rear in the mirror hung on the wall.

A thick cough from the puffy jaws of her bald client drew her eyes away from her reflection, reminding her of his presence. He was still battling with his long dark trousers.

"Mister. What are you waiting for? Pay me and leave please."

She motioned to a standing shelf at the end of her large mattress.

"No problem. Debby, Debby, I'll pay you well."
Debra cringed at his utterance, particularly the pet name he had conjured up. He is lucky he is a reliable client, if not.... The bald and round man who was finally clothed folded a few one thousand naira notes and placed them on the shelf, grasping his key nearby on the wooden furniture. He smiled at Debra and strolled to the door, stealing a glimpse of her once more before exiting the room.

Debra sighed deeply, and lifted her gaze to the wall clock. It was nearly midnight. A weary smile appeared on her radiant face. The bald man had been her sixth client for the night, and she was relieved to be taking a break from her commercial coitus trade...at least until dusk returned the following day. Now all I need is a strong drink, and I will sleep like a baby.

She trudged toward her shelf and retrieved the folded cash paid by her last client, the notes were mint, to her pleasant surprise. She counted the money briskly and beamed again; her client had paid her ten thousand naira, nearly a fifty percent bump in the price she had charged.

"More alcohol for me," she muted, shimmying to a music playing in her head.

Finally, she dashed out of the room, eager to suppress the night's canal activities residing in her memories.

CHAPTER 2
Debra had 6 bottles of lager, and a small flask of spirit weltering in her system, yet, she remained as alert as a night shift guard on patrol duty.

She walked majestically as the cold night breeze assaulted the streets and conveyed her feet with a strange elegance. She wasn't quite drunk, but her sobriety remained questionable. It didn't matter though, she was only three houses away from her lodge, 'The 69 hotel'.

It was a hotel that barely crossed over the two stars rating, and mostly catered to male clients who wanted to spend their nights immersed in commercialised lovemaking. Debra reached the front gate of the hotel and tried to push her way in, but the gate was barred from the inside by the night-shift security guard.

With swelling confidence, she banged at the gate with her clenched fists, stirring a loud disturbance that infringed the quiet night.

"Na who be dat," a voice shouted from within the hotel's premises.

"Debra, you fool! Open the gate."

She rubbed her forehead gently trying to constrain a mild headache that was brewing in her head.

"Aunty Debra Na You."

Loud clinging sounds of the gate's bars being unbarred resonated into the air, worsening Debra's head pains.

And suddenly, the sound of chaotic footsteps emanated from the tarred road behind her as she let herself into the gate. Her nervous hands shut the black metal barrier, and they swiftly slid the bars into their holds. Debra was about to proceed toward the entrance to her lodge, when a loud bang at the gate startled her.

Though the alcohol within her system made her less timid, it didn't hide the apprehension in her voice.

"W-who is it?" she asked in an anxious stutter.
"Please open the gate," the trembling voice of a man echoed back.

"I am being chased by thieves."

"Madam, no open that gate oooh," the security guard shouted from his quarters which was adjacent to the gate.

"Please open it. They wanted to snatch my car, but I took off with the keys. Please, they will beat me to death if they lay their hands on me."

Debra was confused, biting her lips to process the tales being conveyed by the cold wind from the other side of the gate.

"How do I know you are not a robber?"

She drew her ears closer to metal barrier, hoping to hear anything that would make the her decision easier.

"I am Kevin Ikot," the voice said.

"An alumnus of LASU, and a staff of Unilever. I can show you my I.D card if you wish."

"Slip it under the gate."

After a brief moment, Debra felt the lower end of the gate shudder. She withdrew her phone from the pocket of her jean shorts, and pointed its bright luminous screen to the ground near the narrow opening below the broad gate.

A hard plastic card glinted on the ground, and she picked it to confirm the name of its owner.
'Kevin Timothy Ikot,' it read.

'Assistant Operation Manager, Unilever.'

Debra sighed deeply, praying she wouldn't regret the act of kindness she was about display. She reached for the bolts of the gate, and unhooked them; first the bolt far above her head, then the one near her feet. She hadn't even reached for the gate's handle when the man pushed through the unlocked barrier, gaining access into the hotel's premises.

He hurriedly reached for the bars and secured the gates, panting gratefully afterwards. His life was safe for now, however, he couldn't say the same for his precious vehicle.
