These three members of the Judicial arm confuse me as I don't know their job descriptions and why they are different.Someone with knowledge on this, preferably a lawyer should help me out. |

Attorney General - the principal legal officer who represents a country or a state in legal proceedings and gives legal advice to the government. Minister of Justice is the same as Attorney General The Chief Justice of Nigeria or CJN is the head of the judicial arm of the government of Nigeria, and presides over the country's Supreme Court and the National Judicial Council. The Attorney General is the Chief law officer of the federation. All criminal prosecution by the federal government must get his blessings. He decides who is to be prosecuted and who is not. He decide which case to discontinue and which should go on. EFCC, POLICE, DSS, etc CANNOT prosecute ANYBODY without the approval of the office of the Attorney General. If they do, he can withdraw the case from the court. HE IS THAT POWERFUL!!! The Minister of Justice is the Oga of the Justice Ministry. He supervises every parastatals and departments in the ministry. He see that Justice system is reformed and well etc. He is a member of the EXECUTIVE. He is an appointee of the President. Both offices are VERY powerful but in Nigeria both offices are vested on just ON MAN, the Attorney General/Minister of Justice. The Chief Justice of Nigeria is the head of the Judiciary, the Head of Supreme Court and a justice of the court. kolafolabi:Both offices are different but Nigeria system combine both to make the holder too powerful and also to allow the President undue power being that the AGF is his appointee. |
