The raging controversy over the genuine history of Ile-Ife, the cradle of Yorubas seems to be unabating. For some time now, several people have been coming out with different accounts on who the earliest settlers of Ile-Ife are.

The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, speaking yesterday at the First Chinua Achebe International Conference, organized by the Institute of African Studies, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, told the gathering that a recent historical account he came across showed that the igbos had been existing earlier that what was captured in Chinua Achebe’s book.

He said based on the information he came about recently, the igbos are indeed the original settlers of Ile-Ife whom Oduduwa met on ground when he got there.

Igwe Achebe further charged researchers at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to embark on further research which would help validate or dismiss the claim about the Igbos origin and settlement.

It would be recalled that the Olugbo of Ugbo land, Oba Frederick Akinruntan recently claimed in a book he published and in several interviews that the Ugbos are the landlords of Ile-Ife.
