We Did Not Plan To Wipe Out Igbos – Obasanjo by Gistpeeps: 7:04pm On May 25, 2017

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that it was not the intention of the Federal Government to wipe out Igbos during the civil war.

Obasanjo made this comment at an event tagged, ‘Memory and Nation Building: Biafra 50 years later’, which held in Abuja on Thursday.

The event was held to mark 50 years of the declaration of an independent state of Biafra by the late Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu on May 30, 1967.

Obasanjo was the Commander, Third Marine Commando Division during the war.

He was the military officer who accepted the surrender of Biafran forces led by Philip Effong on January 12, 1970, after three years of war.

He said everything that the federal troops did was in a bid to unite the country.

Obasanjo added, “We had in our pocket the Geneva convention to guide us. In addition to that, we had a special code of conduct. Third, we had foreign observers. We had people who were like umpires.

“If it was a war to exterminate and we had no reconciliation in mind, what would foreign observers be doing? The foreign observers reported periodically and even had powers to investigate any allegation and they did.

“As one of the commanders in the field, I have said it before and I say it again. Civil war is more difficult than fighting in a foreign land.

“In foreign land, you fight to exterminate and destroy but in civil war, you fight to unite and when you’re fighting to unite, how much do you have to do to prevent destruction and alienation.”

It wasn't necessary but some of them are quite headstrong.

They are looking for who would kill them.

Please safe yourself all those stories. You and Osibanjo has been sent on errand to upset the Easterners abi? well we refused to be annoyed at your pettiness, good you mention Nigeria is a combination of supposedly three different countries merged into one , since its not possible to fuse together is only commonsense for every so called region (countries) to go their separate ways. Nigeria as a project is a failed one grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

How many Igbo people lost their lives?
How many kids died? Millions...

Obj hush your mouth... The plan was to exterminate the Biafrans...

The world powers didn't care as long as they continue their 'imperialism'...

Hmmmm... dont agree 100% with obasanjo.... what then was the reason for £20 as equivalent to all deposits in the bank and stealing of their structures after destroying all of theirs in the east as a result of the war also making them incapable of owning, setting up or buying into shareholding capital of business. If that is not wiping out, then what is ?...

In as much as we want unity, transparency and honesty comes before unity..

I have no doubt, I only said second largest because Hausa Fulani is usually combined to represent one group. If split as different groups then we make the Single largest ethnic group in the country, no doubt.
