Yar’Adua: ‘Cabal holding nation hostage’
From DAVID ONWUCHEKWA, Nnewi
Friday, January 15, 2010

An Nnewi- based lawyer and a human right activist, Mr Chike Okafor has condemned what he described as a dangerous vacuum being created following the absence of President Musa Yar’Adua who is said to be receiving treatment in Saudi Arabia for over one month.

Mr Okafor expressed concern that the situation can give rise to any military adventurist to seize power since, according to him, nobody is acting as the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces.  He wondered what will happen in an event of military inversion against the nation as no President will order the army to fight back

Okafor said that the most reasonable and constitutional action is to hand over power to the Vice President, Goodluck Jonathan to function as the acting President pending when Yar’Adua will be fit to come back and resume office.

He blamed those he called cabals who he said are bent on causing crisis “as they don’t want the country to follow constitutional process to hand over power to the Vice President on acting capacity for fear of them losing the presidency.

Dangerous vacuum
Well, the ill health of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, anybody can fall ill, is an unfortunate situation.  But the way the whole thing is being played out is very unfortunate. Going by the povisions of the 199 constitution, it can be said that this situation was forseen.  There are provisions of the constitution that foresee that.  There are remedies in such a situation, and the proper thing should have been that the Vice President be sworn in as an acting President pending when Yar’Adua will come back.  Nobody is saying that Yar’Adua should resign.  Any well-meaning Nigerian should not call for his resignation till it is ascertained that his ill health cannot allow him to carry out the functions of the President.  But the proper thing that should be done was for him to write to the Senate or the National Assembly so that the Vice President, Mr Goodluck Jonathan can take over as the acting President.  If you look at the whole thing there is a power vacuum.  The power is floating in the air.

Any military adventurist can use that opportunity to come in now  because nobody is in control of the armed forces.  There is no Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. Nobody is commanding the military forces.  If there is any inversion of Nigeria nobody can give the military order to move or to counter the attack.  So, there is a power vacuum, and it is very dangerous.

Look at it this way.  In America when President Reagan wanted to have a surgery just for some few hours he handed over to the Vice President.  It was officially done and the Vice President started acting as President immediately.  He was in control of the armed forces.  So what is happening in Nigeria is unfortunate., and every well meaning Nigerian should feel concerned about it.  You see, because this is not a banana republic.

Cabal in charge
I feel that there is a cabal that is holding Yar’Adua hostage, holding the nation to ransom.  It is this same cabal that killed Agui Ironsi.  It is this same cabal that killed M.K.O Abiola.  It is this same cabal that killed Ken Sarowiwa and this same cabal is holding the nation to ransom and hostage but we should not allow it to continue.  They should not be allowed to achieve what they are scheming.  This is a constitutional matter and if the constitution is not followed this nation may boil again,
