It is 50 years now since the commencement of a bloody Civil War, which started when Eastern and Southern Nigeria attempted to break away from Nigeria to create a sovereign state called Biafra. Millions were killed and many more became homeless. In recent times there has been renewed agitation for Biafra among mostly Igbo people. The response by the Federal government has been brutal and disproportionate; killing and arresting several peaceful protesters and detaining leaders of the struggle indefinitely. Many believe that the drive for Biafra will fail just as it did 50 years ago. Yet, Biafra may just be a pipe dream. There are reasons to believe that the struggle may not die down and that the dream may be actualized, perhaps in a foreseeable future.

Both former President Olusegun Obasanjo and acting President Yemi Osinbajo spoke at the commemoration of 50 years of Biafra.
