A group of soldiers overthrew shagari government because of corruption, and looked for the most senior among their ranks and picked Buhari who was the GOC 3 Armoured Division Rukuba Barracks, Jos. It was called Rukuba Barracks then, before being renamed Maxwell Khobe Cantonment.

For those who still do not know the real reason why Buhari overthrew Shagari. The coup was carried out to prevent Dr Ekwueme who was Shagari's vice from becoming president of Nigeria; when Shagari completes his second term. The coup was done early enough in shagari's second term to prevent suspicion of the real agenda.

The politicians of that era were just as lawless and reckless as those we have today. if things were so rosy back then Fela's music wouldn't have been a hit to the common man. You should hear the choice words he had for Shagari's government.

That said, the coup was another mistake. It was a wrong trying to correct another wrong. We should have found democratic solutions to a democratic problem.
