Hear what this mumu is saying. Those days, politicians were acting with absolute impunity and wanton looting of public funds was the norm. Umaru Dikko embezzled N4 billion when a brand new Peugeot 504 was being sold for N5000. Kano state governor Sabo Barkin Zuwo had N3 million hidden under his bed. Shagari had the most corrupt politicians under him and hoarding and stifling scarcity of essential commodities was the order of the day. For those of you glorifying the Shagari years, you don't remember the massive looting, misappropriation of funds, nepotism, and the electoral fraud that characterized those times... our problems didn't start with Buhari.

The country was already headed for recession (then as now, oil prices had dropped), but Buhari's strong headed policies made things worse. I call it the tightening spiral:

- he wants government fiscal discipline, and to limit importation, since we have fewer dollars from oil
- less government spending and less dollars mean less business
- less business, people get fired, now we have fewer consumers
- fewer consumers mean businesses go bust, meaning less employment
- and so on...

What did USA do during it's depression? Large-scale infrastructure projects to employ people, encouraged farmers, raised tariffs on imported goods to stimulate industry. Basically the same things Buhari tried twice. Unfortunately for Nigeria, our credit's not so great and we don't have an industrial base.

I belive Shagari, like Jonathan and Buhari, are good men at heart, but somehow unable to curtail stealing and the political machinations of power brokers. For the most part, these were propelled to the limelight by real power brokers (Shagari had Dikko, Jonathan had Obasanjo, and Buhari had IBB and Abiola (financial backer, it's claimed), and later Tinubu).

I view the major problem is that the modern Nigerian state is a continuation of the older colonial Nigerian state, in the sense that its officials - our people - are not loyal to it. We're still treating Nigeria as a foreign entity while we're from North, South, West, East... I'm not being very clear, but it's like it was OK to steal from oyinbo, but we somehow forgot that we are now stealing from ourselves.

And he refused to appear before Oputa panel. He refused to appear for presidential debates. He has really never been held accountable.

The military regimes of Obasanjo, Buhari,IBB, Abacha and Abdullsalami were the most corrupt era in Nigeria. And that is a fact.

Obasanjo military regime - missing NNPC money, ITT scandal and a host of others

Buhari military regime - emptying of Nigerian treasury on the day of the coup which was meant as both a pension fund for the coup plotters if the coup failed and as pay off to western politicians to back the coup plot.

IBB - missing Gulf oil windfall amounting to over 10 billion dollars

Abacha - serial kleptomaniac who turned Nigeria to his private estate. His loot is still being recovered till this day and nobody is sure about the extent of his loot

Abdullsalami regime emptied the treasury to a tune of over 15 billion dollars before handing to civilian regime.
