To celebrate AMG's 50th anniversary, here is a brief history of their humble beginnings.

AMG was founded as a racing engine forge in 1967 under the name AMG Motorenbau und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (AMG Engine Production and Development, Ltd.), by former Mercedes-Benz engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher in Burgstall an der Murr, near Stuttgart. The letters "AMG" stand for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach (Aufrecht's birth town). In 1976 most of AMG moved to Affalterbach, with the racing-engine development remaining at the old location in Burgstall. At this time Erhard Melcher ceased to be a partner, but continued to be an employee at the Burgstall location.

In 1993, with AMG having become a high-profile purveyor of modified Mercedes-Benz cars, Daimler-Benz AG and AMG signed a contract of cooperation, allowing AMG to leverage Daimler-Benz's extensive dealer network and leading to commonly developed vehicles (the first one being the Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG, in 1993)...

Mercedes Benz 300SEL-6.8 (The Red Pig).



This car started as a 300SEL, with the engine replaced by the M100 6.3L V8 engine. AMG produced special versions of the 6.3 to compete in racing events, usually with the engine enlarged to 6.8 liters or more. The car had an impressive, but short-lived racing career, due to the lack of suitable tires, or rule changes preventing the use of them.



AMG's so-called "Red pig" finished 2nd in the 24 Hours of Spa in 1971. This heavy vehicle with 6834 cc and 420 hp (313 kW) was fast, but frequent refuelling was necessary, and tire wear was also high. The car was sold to French company Matra, they used it for tests of jet fighter landing gear. Five were made, three racers and two test cars. Last original works-built Waxenberger 69 "red pig" is in Mobilia Automotive Museum, Finland.

AMG 5.5L M117 V8

This engine came stock with 295hp (220kW) & was used in the R107 560SL & the W126 560 SE/SEL/SEC. AMG tuned it to give up to 355hp (265kW).

AMG 6.0L M117 V8

The same 5.6L M117 V8 engine was bored out to 6.0L to give 360hp-385hp (268kW-287kW) and was used in the W124 300E-6.0 AMG "Hammer" & the W126 560SEC-6.0 "Widebody".

Other W124s include:

300E-3.4 AMG with a 3.4L M104 I6 good for 268hp (200kW).

E36 AMG with a 3.6L M104 I6 good for 280hp (210kW).

E500-6.0/E60 AMG with a 6.0L M119 V8 good for 381hp (284kW).

W123 280E AMG

Yes! Our very own "regular" benz was made irregular by AMG.
It had the 2.8L M110 I6 fettled by those nutters to give 209hp (156kW).
This car could go from 0-100km/h in 8.9s, respectable in the 80s.
Did I mention that it was also manual? Sweet!




They also dropped their 5.0L M117 V8 into them.

W201 190E 3.2-12V AMG

We all know of the homologation 2.3-16s & 2.5-16s, but little was known of this.
AMG took the 190E 2.6L M103 I6 engine and bored it to 3.2L to produce 234bhp (174kW), with a manual transmission.

W202 C55 AMG

Many of us may have heard of the C36 AMG (3.6L M104 I6, 280hp/209kW) and even the C43 AMG (4.3L M113 V8, 306hp/228kW), but very few know that the W202 got to have a C55 AMG.
But first, you had to buy a C43, take it back to AMG & get a bored-out 5.5L M113 V8 producing 350hp (260kW).

R129 500SL-6.0/SL60/SL70/SL73

Prior to '92, MB's flagship roadster was the 500SL with the 5.0L M119 V8. AMG made it 6.0L to put out 376hp (280kW). After Daimler AG acquired AMG, they continued as the SL60 AMG.

Later on, MB introduced the SL600 6.0L M120 V12, and AMG just had to have a go again. It came in two guises: SL70 (489hp/365kW) & the SL73 (518hp/386kW).
The 7.3L engine would later be used by Pagani in the Zonda.

In its last run, AMG put in the 5.4L M113 V8 to create the SL55 AMG, churning out 349hp (260kW).

W140 S73 AMG T Kombi.

Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah of Brunei Darussalam, known for his exotic & eccentric collection of over 7000 cars worth more than $300million, decided to buy an S-class. But not just any S-class, as you might've guessed.
So he called AMG. Remember that 7.3L engine we just talked about? Yeah, well, he told them he wanted it in his S-class ...in station wagon guise!
Loyal AMG obeyed and did just that, but not once, ...FIFTEEN TIMES! They upped the power to 565hp (421kW) as well as other custom accessories. The Sultan ended up taking only ten instead.

Before AMG wedded Daimler AG, it was having affairs with others, and these are some of such out-of-wedlock children:

The Mitsubishi S10 Debonair V3000 Royal received mostly cosmetic facelift.



*In the Mitsubishi Galant GTi-16v, AMG upped power of the naturally aspirated I4 from 140hp to 168hp, with aggressive body kits, alloy rims, leather & whatnot.
However, this was a rare case of an AMG being less powerful than the regular production car, as the VR4 version had upwards of 200hp.



*Mercedes-Benz of South Africa sold the Honda Civic saloon as the Ballade. They built an AMG version which featured a performance exhaust system, Remotec wheels and AMG trim.

This particular 280GE-5.6 "Frankenwagen" is something to behold.

These are just masterpieces!! AMG all the way!! I love the solid look of their cars! I remember well those days, any car that collides with a mercedes was in for trouble!!
