Exactly a year ago, the clean up of Ogoni land in Rivers state was flagged off by the Federal Government of Nigeria, a project that is supposed to yield more benefits than one can imagine for the Ogoni people and perhaps spread to its surrounding environs.
The United Nations Environmental Program(UNEP) report gave a detailed description of the situation of Ogoni land as regards the level of pollution through oil spill and its impact on the people and their environment. This report equally stated the need for a clean up without delay. It was also stipulated that the clean up is to last for a period of not less than 24 years, one of the biggest, if not the biggest in history.
It was a good thing at the time that our Federal Government accepted to carry out the clean up and that brought some sort of relief to the people of Ogoni. Today is exactly a year after the clean up was flagged off but what tangible or substantial work has been done to show the Federal Government's commitment towards achieving this task?
Of a truth, this is a project that will take time but then, the journey of a thousand miles begins with with a step and as at today, I can say that the Federal Government has failed to take ideal and proper steps to actualize this proposed project because of insincerity on its part. The Federal Government was quick to flag off a clean up project without carrying out a scoping exercise, a baseline survey or having a good environmental management plan, a project manager, a legal framework and all other necessities. It is also on record that the Board of Trustees for the clean up was set up almost six months after the flag off; these show a high level of failure on the part of the Federal Government.
The slow response of the Federal Government in carrying out this clean up is so disheartening and to a large extent, shows a lack of sincerity as seems to be one characteristic of the present day Federal Government of Nigeria. One may not be entirely wrong in thinking that the people of Ogoni are being marginalized.
The government has to step up its game by carrying out the clean up processes as speedily as possible as this will improve the socio-economic status of the people of Ogoni and even its surrounding environs. There is so much oil in Ogoni land but very little to show for this abundant resource.
May God help us!

It's funny how we're so gullible in this Niger Delta. All those ceremonial visit Buhari and he's brothers sent osibanjo to do is just to silence Avengers, make them believe they're about to turn Ogoni to Dubai is nonsense. The real deal is to continue to increase the pumping of our OIL to use and develop North development commission.

Let's just continue to wait until it's too late for us to ask for something that belongs to us.

Non Igbo minorities in the south south should just support the ongoing biafra agitation just for the sake of the unborn generations.

They have been played as fools for so long in this contraption.

When a paltry 2 billion naira was earmarked for the project it was then I knew they weren't serious. Finally, we have been played and back to square one.

It was just a political maneuver to insult Jonathan and squash Biafran agitation. Yet is was the same groups that refused to pass the PIB law that would have empowered oil producing communities and give them the financial resources to fix their land.

lol ... Ogoni clean up? y'all know the clean up was done on the day of the flag up via the camera lenses of the local and especially the international media that came for the much publicised PR stunt. cheesy

Dem use am hype themselves in the eyes of the west to score one or two points over Jonathan. But the façade was for that one day as they never had the interests of those folks whose lands were polluted at heart in the first place. Recall that was at the height of the deluded Avenger days who lacked no strategy or objective other than contribution to the pollution of their lands to quell their temper tantrums to be settled. The long term has already exposed the charade any one with good political brain saw that day.

Besides the pretty woman don already use d well planned ruse step up go UN - and you know aint nothing in the whole wide world the leftist establishment love more than educated muslim women that suit their worldview narrative and agenda.
